Chicago ‘Workers Over Billionaires rally protests Trump policies, National Guard threat

Labor Day for hundreds of Chicago workers meant standing in solidarity against what they call a billionaire takeover of the government.

On Monday in Chicago’s West Loop, hundreds of people from dozens of unions came together, from the Chicago Teachers Union, to hospitality workers, Teamsters union members, healthcare employees and their allies, to rally against the Trump administration’s federal cuts.

“I think solidarity among workers is probably the most important thing we can do right now,” said participant Mark Petersen. “We’re looking at our country get disassembled from the top down, and the best thing we can do is unite from the bottom up.”

The rally called “Workers Over Billionaires” aimed to show the power of the working class during a time when billionaires play a role in politics. The group called out Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency cuts and corporations like Target for scaling back DEI practices.

“What has happened in this country is that the billionaires don’t understand this country was created in protest and resistance to fight off a king, not to recreate a king,” said Randi Weingarten of the American Federation of Teachers.

Meanwhile, on social media the White House posted, “For decades, a corrupt political class sold out our workers and shipped away our jobs. On January 20, that ended. Under President Trump, we’re restoring American labor, reviving manufacturing, securing fair trade, and bringing jobs back home—to AMERICAN workers.”

The U.S. Department of Labor called it a “new dawn” and “golden age” of the American worker.

But Monday’s rally also had another focus of protest.

“No troops in Chicago! No troops in Chicago! Invest in Chicago,” Mayor Brandon Johnson chanted amid the potential for National Guard troops to come to the city, along with ICE agents.

It’s something the president said he intends to do if crime is not “straightened out” in Chicago soon.

There were 53 people shot and 7 killed over the Labor Day weekend across the city.
