Who Were the Bears Scouting During Sunday’s Notre Dame-Miami Thriller?

Jeremiyah Love is among the best prospects who are eligible for the 2026 NFL Draft. The Notre Dame running back is someone who Chicago Bears fans should be keeping tabs on this year. And I would like to imagine that members of the Bears’ front office had their eyes on the Notre Dame running back prospect during Sunday’s game against Miami. However, Love wasn’t even the top headline-maker from the game. And he might not even have been the most intriguing prospect on the team’s watch list.

In case you missed it, Miami built a 21-7 lead and watched it dwindle away before this game-winning field goal:

"WHAT A KICK! GOOOOD! FROM 47!" – Sean McDonough "That thing might have been good from 65! He hit that with such adrenaline! WAY up top on the upright! Just a tremendous strike!" – Greg McElroy Miami takes down Notre Dame 27-24. #CFB[image or embed]

Leave it to a kicker to steal the show in a Week 1 showdown between College Football Playoff hopefuls like Notre Dame and Miami. How can you not love the return of college football to our weekly viewing schedule?

2026 NFL Draft Jeremiyah Love and Francis Mauigoa are top-tier prospects to watch moving forward

The return of college football also means the return of NFL mock drafts. And while it is too early for us to go down the 2026 NFL Draft rabbit hole, let’s remember that front offices around the league are constantly on the move. The grind doesn’t stop for general managers, scouts, and others who are putting in work to unearth the next great draft gem. So, as you might expect, the Bears had a significant presence at the Notre Dame-Miami game. Fighting Irish beat reporter Mike Berardino shared (via Twitter/X) a list of NFL execs at the game versus Miami, which included Bears GM Ryan Poles, Assistant GM Ian Cunningham, and Director of College Breck Ackley.

Now that we know who the Bears had in attendance, the only question left unanswered is one about who they were watching.

I’m going to bookmark this CBS Sports list of top prospects who are eligible for the 2026 NFL Draft. This figures to be a handy resource when we move into a timeframe in which we start caring about college football players we would like to see the Bears target. As for the top prospects for Notre Dame and Miami, there are two who stand out as tip-top prospects: Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love and Miami offensive tackle Francis Maugigoa.

For what it’s worth, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. predicts that Love will land in the top-10. Hopefully, the Bears won’t be picking there next spring. And because we’ve dug in a little on love, I wanted to take some time to get a first look at the Miami offensive line prospect. Mauigoa ranks seventh on this 2026 NFL Draft preseason big board by Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports. This is what he had to say about the Hurricanes’ top offensive lineman:

A road-grader and earth-mover in the run game, Mauigoa engulfs defensive ends. And for his size (unofficially 6-foot-6 and 329 pounds), he flashes insane athleticism. Right now, he’s a better run blocker than pass protector, and he’s played just right tackle at Miami, but he’s a first-round talent who should only get better in 2025.

On the one hand, Francis Mauigoa is a top-tier prospect whose play could lock him into a top-10 spot. And if the Bears can get an elite offensive tackle prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft, I’d sign off on that without thinking twice. But on the other hand, I don’t think I’d be feeling good about things if the Bears had a top-10 pick (again).

Plus, I’m not sure if a player who has been a primary right tackle would be a perfect fit for a team that doesn’t have a sure-fire left tackle penciled in going into the 2025 season. However, unless the Bears address their offensive tackle needs via trade or free agency before next offseason, we will be focusing on the 2026 NFL Draft as a path for Chicago’s football team to plug a prominent hole.
