Famed rodeo organizer dies

Dr. Thomas Barkley Ricks, widely known in this County, passed away in Scotia early Saturday morning, August 13.

“Doc” Ricks for more than 20 years was foreman of the Eden Valley Ranch above Willits and more recently served as superintendent of the Pacific Lumber Company Ranch at Scotia.

He was a great horseman and an able and competent veterinarian. He was one of the leaders in the foundation of the California Cattlemen’s Association and held several important offices as well as serving as president of that group. With Dr. E.C. Bennett of Ukiah, and Raymond Hill, now deceased, Dr. Ricks was one of the originators of the Ukiah Rodeo which at its height gained national recognition.

The first Ukiah Rodeo was held in 1926 at the old Ukiah Fair Grounds across from the present city airport and was held annually for five years. The site is now owned by Dr. Bennett.

The event enjoyed much popularity with pictures and notices appearing on menus of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company trains running between here and Chicago. The New York Times once sent photographers to cover the show.

Widely known and loved, Dr. Ricks leaves innumerable friends to mourn his passing. To all he was “a swell guy and a great horseman.” He is survived by his wife, the former Grace Beattie of Willits.

Funeral services were held in Eureka on Monday, August 15, at 2 p.m.
