A moderate-to-strong geomagnetic storm is expected Monday night after a Coronal Mass Ejection, or CME was emitted from the sun Sunday, and that means the Northern Lights may be visible around Chicago and across northern Illinois in the evening and even into Tuesday morning.
But it’s not a guarantee that you’ll see them. So before we go any further, I want to emphasize two things:
The Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts the geomagnetic storm will start to ramp up to a G2, or “moderate” level, after 4 p.m. CT . The peak is expected to be a G3, or “strong” storm between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m., with a slight chance it reaches the G4, “severe” level, which ranks as level 4 of 5.
Timing is difficult to forecast. But thankfully for us, we should have mostly clear skies around Chicago the entire night.
We have been surprised by a few major geomagnetic storms over the past year and a half as we’ve been in the peak of an 11-year solar cycle. However, solar activity is expected to be on the way down from that peak.
It’s worth a shot to look toward the northern sky any time after it gets dark enough, but I’d also manage expectations.
