Every driving law change hitting Brit motorists in September including fuel change and toll road hike

MOTORISTS using company cars should expect to face fresh charges as part of major law changes hitting in September.

The new changes kick in from Monday – and include toll hikes and fuel changes which are bound to affect thousands of Brit drivers.

The Labour Party changes will affect drivers who use one of the most popular routes in the UK, as well as motorists who own new cars.

First up in the changes are new advisory fuel rates for company cars.

This includes a new distinction for EV drivers.

Diesel drivers face a small hike in running costs while electric car owners could be stung with different charges.

These fees will vary in size depending on whether drivers plug in at home or at a public charger.

For drivers with factory new cars, the UK is also rolling out a new number plate identifier.

These fresh vehicles will have a “75” tag – following the launch of the “25” plate in March.

This comes after a long tradition of biannual plate changes which have been in place since 2001.

Experts hope the plate changes will boost EV sales – both new and used.

This will also go hand-in-hand with the Electric Car Grant which aims to improve sales.

One of the most popular routes used by UK drivers is also set to face new charges.

Commuters travelling over the Dartford Crossing will have to pay more.

This follows skyrocketing demand among drivers for using the strategic route.

Future of Roads Minister Lillian Greenwood announced plans to jack up prices in June.

But from September, cars will have to pay £3.50 as a one-off payment, while pre-pay account holders will save 70p per trip.

Additionally, buses and vans with two axles could be charged as much as £4.20.

And larger vehicles with more than two axles may face fees of up to £8.40.

The government said the huge surge in Dartford Crossing travellers forced them to raise prices.

The well-trodden route sees over 150,000 vehicles every day – with the busiest days potentially welcoming over 180,000 cars.

Greenwood said: “I am aware that these necessary changes to the charges will be unwelcome news for users of the crossing.

“However, we will continue to support local people through the local resident discount scheme and I have been determined to keep the nominal fee paid by local people as low as possible, as many rely on the crossing to get around their local area.”

The government is also expected to rollout more eligible vehicles for the Electric Car Grant, following its launch in July.

So far only two cars are eligible for the maximum grant allowance of £3,750, the Ford Puma Gen-E and the Ford e-Tourneo Courier.

But more are expected to join this roster as the list expands.

On top of these changes, self-driving cars could see some guidance on how they might be allowed to operate.

A call for evidence on potential safety standards will end on September 1.

It comes as authorities hear from relevant parties about how safety principles should be managed when it comes to the new tech.

Another consultation will finish at the end of the month, which is designed to explore how self-driving vehicles will be regulated on roads.

Self-driving vehicles – including taxi, private hire, and bus-like services – could be on the road from Spring 2026.
