Derek Tran: Americans deserve to know the true toll of tariffs

Orange County, California, is consistently ranked as one of the most expensive places to live in America. After the shocks to our economy because of COVID-19, supply chain issues, and rapidly changing technology, the instability rocking Main Street is causing prices to climb even higher.

Prices of basic necessities are jumping from one week to the next. That’s not feasible for working families. As a father of three young kids, I know how important it is for my family to plan what we’re going to spend on things like groceries, school supplies, and clothes.

Instead of doing everything he can to bring more stability to the market, President Trump’s reckless trade wars are making life more difficult. Tariffs can be an important tool to level the economic playing field and even bolster national security, but tariffs imposed without clear objectives impose a tax on working families and make our economy more uncertain.

That’s why I co-founded the Lowering Cost Caucus with Reps. Hillary Scholten and Greg Landsman. We want to break through the Washington noise and focus on building an economy that not only helps working families get by, but get ahead.

One of our first actions was to introduce the Toll of Tariffs Act, to bring transparency and accountability to President Trump’s tariff regime. The American people deserve answers about how these tariffs will impact prices, and Congress needs this information to check and balance the Trump Administration’s actions on our economy.  American families deserve real answers about the prices they’re seeing, not political spin.

I’ve also taken action to bring even more relief to parents incurring major expenses when they’re starting or growing their family.

As part of the Congressional Dads Caucus’s “Babies Over Billionaires” initiative, I introduced the Baby Food Tax Relief Act, which would exempt essential items like formula, bottles, and highchairs from Trump’s tariffs. I also cosponsored legislation to exempt other goods like books, clothing, cribs, and other essentials from these reckless tariffs. These are basic necessities, not luxury goods, and they shouldn’t be priced out of reach for new parents.

When my parents came to the United States as refugees, this country welcomed them and helped me rise from poverty to the halls of power. My family’s story exemplifies the American Dream, but that dream can feel out of reach for folks across our country who struggle to keep up with rising costs – sometimes even while working multiple jobs.

Lowering prices isn’t just about helping families stretch their hard-earned money a little further – it’s about freedom and security. It’s not just one person that will benefit from these savings; it’s our whole community.

I’m going to keep fighting to keep your hard-earned money in your pocket. I’m committed to working across the aisle to ensure California families don’t just get by, but get ahead.
