Tennessee Tech welcomes nearly 2,000 high school students at Upper Cumberland College Fair

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Nearly 2,000 students from 21 high schools across the region descended on Tennessee Tech University’s campus this week for the Upper Cumberland College Fair.

There, students met with representatives from more than three dozen higher education institutions, including universities from as far away as Texas, Alabama and Kentucky, and 19 different Tennessee Tech campus departments and offices.

Tech has hosted the annual event for nearly 35 years, showcasing the university’s hospitality and academic programs while welcoming in competitor institutions – all in the name of ensuring Upper Cumberland high school students have every available opportunity to pursue postsecondary education.

“We love being able to show off this campus and give high school students a feel for what the Golden Eagle community is all about,” said Peyton Land, campus visits and events coordinator at Tech. “At the same time, we want students to know there are so many ways for them to further their education. The Upper Cumberland College Fair is a way to demonstrate the many available paths students have in front of them – all under one roof.”

Land added that this year’s Upper Cumberland College Fair was likely the biggest one yet, thanks in part to participation from local homeschooling communities. As an increasingly popular choice for Tennessee homeschoolers, Tech has earned the “homeschooling-friendly certification” seal for the last three years from Homeschooling Parent magazine.

“We’ve made a concerted effort to build a stronger connection to our local homeschool community,” added Land. “We had two homeschool umbrella groups that joined us at this year’s college fair, and we hope to continue to build on that.”

Also at the event, Tech previewed its upcoming free application week. Prospective undergraduate students in the U.S. can apply to Tech during the week of Sept. 15-19 and waive the standard $25 application fee.

“Free application week and the Upper Cumberland College Fair are just two of the many ways we’re engaging prospective students and helping them realize that a college education is closer in reach than they may think,” said Land.

High school students who could not attend the Upper Cumberland College Fair – or who simply want a more personalized campus visit experience – are invited to contact Tech’s Office of Admissions about planning a VIP campus tour. Likewise, interested high school counselors and administrators can contact the university to schedule group tours for up to 200 students at a time. Tennessee Tech is rated as the top public university in Tennessee by Money and recognized as a “Best National University” by U.S. News & World Report. The university offers more than 225 programs of study and Tech grads leave with the least debt of all public universities in the state.
