CUBS LINEUP — Only sweeps? Why not! Here’s a look at the Chicago Cubs lineup as they look to wrap up August with their second series-sweeping win (and third straight sweep) of the road trip.

Nico Hoerner is getting the afternoon off, as Willi Castro comes in to play second base.

Likewise, Reese McGuire is back in there behind the plate, completing a pretty nice weekend of rest for Carson Kelly, who has started just one of the last four games. Not a bad idea.

Chicago Cubs: Matthew Boyd, LHP

It has not been a particularly smooth road for Matthew Boyd lately. Since July 28, excluding gems against the Orioles (7.0 IP, 0ER) and Blue Jays (7.0 IP, 2ER), Boyd has given up 17ER in his other four starts (only 20.2 IP), including 9ER in his last two outings.

Why is that happening? Well, the obvious answer is the big jump in innings/workload may finally be hitting him. And unfortunately/obviously, that’s not something that will get better by pitching through it. In fact, I wish the Cubs had an opportunity to rest Boyd a bit, but with Jameson Taillon still out and Jordan Wicks sent down, I’m not sure that chance will pop up organically.

So, like we did for Cade Horton’s start, let’s hope the Cubs lineup can jump out to a huge lead so the Cubs can pull Boyd sooner than absolutely necessary.

And otherwise, let’s hope Boyd is able to shut down the single worst offense in baseball vs left-handed pitching this season (Rockies, 75 wRC+ vsLHP, 30th in MLB).

Colorado Rockies: Tanner Gordon, RHP

Tanner Gordon, 27, has made 18 starts at the big league level in his career, eight last season and ten more so far in 2025. Throughout those games, Gordon has just five quality starts, four this season, and a 7.33 ERA.

HOWEVER, he has been on a nice little roll here lately.

After allowing 23(!) earned runs over a three-start (10.1 IP) stretch from the end of July to the beginning of August, Gordon has looked very good against some good teams:

vsARI: 5.0 IP, 5H, 3ER, 1BB, 2KvsLAD: 6.0 IP, 4H, 1ER, 1BB, 3K@HOU: 6.0 IP, 6H, 1ER, 3BB, 5K

Kinda annoying if he just started to figure something out. After a quick scan, it doesn’t look like he changed his pitch mix or improved his velocity, but obviously something is working for him, especially in his ability to generate weak contact:

First 7 starts: 91.5 MPH EV, 43 hard%, 8.6 barrel%Last 3 starts: 87.2 MPH EV, 38.2 hard%, 7.3 barrel%

That said, he’s still allowing a ton of line drives and fly balls, and he’s not striking guys out at all. Probably just had some good luck. I hope.
