Iconic Hollywood Starlet, 92, Pushes Back on Biopic About Famous Romance

Kim Novak pushed back on an upcoming biopic about her life and romance with Sammy Davis, Jr. starring Sydney Sweeney.

Novak Rejects ‘Scandalous!’ Biopic Title

Scandalous! directed by Coleman Domingo and starring Sweeney, 27, and will revolve around Novak’s relationship with Davis, a highly controversial interracial love affair for its time. It will focus on the social and industry pressures they faced, but Novak, 92, isn’t a fan of the title.

“I don’t think the relationship was scandalous,” the Vertigo star said during an interview with The Guardian published on August 30. “He’s somebody I really cared about. We had so much in common, including that need to be accepted for who we are and what we do, rather than how we look. But I’m concerned they’re going to make it all sexual reasons.”

Novak was Columbia Pictures’ answer to Marilyn Monroe, a blond Hollywood starlet in the mid-1950s. Davis, a member of the Rat Pack, had already made his mark in the entertainment industry, but he was faced with massive amounts of racism for being a Black entertainer. The two reportedly connected over their shared feelings of being outsiders in the industry, and it blossomed into a love affair in 1957.

Studio Boss Threatened Davis Over Affair

However, Columbia Pictures boss Harry Cohn was enraged when he discovered that the two were dating. According to multiple accounts, Cohn enlisted mob intermediaries to deliver threats to Davis. He allegedly told Davis that continuing to see Novak would be “bad for business” and even implied his life could be in danger. Due to the immense amounts of pressure from society and within the industry, the two called it quits.

“Something inside of me rebelled when I was told not to see him,” Leamer quoted Novak as saying. “I didn’t think it was anybody’s business.”
