Prince Harry was at Balmoral, the royal family’s Scottish estate, when he received the devastating news about the death of his mother, Princess Diana. Twenty years later, he revealed his biggest regret about their final conversation.
Harry and William's memories of Diana were the central focus of the 2017 documentary, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. The brothers discussed the impact the Princess of Wales had on their lives as children and how they remained committed to honoring her memory and work.
The Duke of Sussex discussed the regret he felt over his last words with his mother. She had called from Paris, France, to speak with her sons, an exchange the brothers didn't know would be their final goodbye.
Good Morning America shared Harry's recollection of that final telephone call with Diana. In the documentary film, Harry admitted, "It was her speaking from Paris, I can't really necessarily remember what I said, but all I do remember is probably regretting for the rest of my life how short the phone call was."

E! News reprinted a statement from Harry's book, Spare, where he further elaborated on that last chat with the Princess of Wales. "I was running around with Willy and my cousins and didn't want to stop playing. So I'd been short with her."
He added, "Impatient to get back to my games, I'd rushed Mummy off the phone. I wished I'd apologized for it. I wished I'd searched for the words to describe how much I loved her. I didn't know that search would take decades."
Prince William also shared his thoughts about the final time he and Diana spoke. He said, "Harry and I were in a desperate rush to say goodbye, you know, 'see you later.' If I'd known now obviously what was going to happen, I wouldn't have been so blasé about it and everything else."
Diana's last phone call, per The Mirror, was to her friend, the reporter Richard Kay. His remarks were featured in the 2021 ITV documentary Diana.
"I spoke to her that night. [The] police said that the last call she made was to me," Kay revealed.
He continued, "She was desperate to try and make a fresh start and do something different, to explore a different kind of royalty. And she wanted to come back and see her boys."
