Triple-A Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs bounced back from their 8-4 loss on Thursday with a blowout victory on Friday against Las Vegas. James Triantos got the game going for Iowa with a leadoff triple, then Nicky Lopez brought him in with a sac fly in the next at-bat. Las Vegas tied it up in the bottom of the first, and then Ben Cowles gave the lead right back to the Cubs with a solo home run in the second.
The score stayed that way until the fifth, when the Cubs broke the game open with a three-run effort. Jonathan Long and Kevin Alcántara each hit RBI singles, then Iowa added another run on a wild pitch. In the sixth, the Cubs put their foot on the gas with four more runs to ice the game, and in the eighth, Alcántara put an exclamation point on the win with a solo shot, making it 10-2.

Double-A Knoxville Smokies
Knoxville had one of those games where there really wasn’t a whole lot to hang your hat on. They fell 7-1 to Birmingham on Friday night. The team recorded just four hits, two of which came from Pedro Ramirez. Grant Kipp got the start for the Smokies and allowed four runs off the bat in the bottom of the first. The lone Knoxville run came in the top of the ninth, trailing 7-0, when Pedro Ramirez roped an RBI double to score Jefferson Rojas.

High-A South Bend Cubs
South Bend lost a tough one on Friday night as they’re still looking for their first win of the series against Peoria. The Chiefs got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first, but South Bend answered back in the second with a pair of their own on a Rafael Morel RBI double and a Cam Sisernos walk.
Peoria picked up two more runs in the third, and another in the sixth to make it 5-2, but in the seventh, the Cubs battled back with another pair of runs on a Sisneros sac fly and a Brian Kalmer home run to cut the deficit to 5-4. In the ninth, South Bend got its first two runners on, and after a double steal had runners on second and third with only one out, but unfortunately, they weren’t able to bring either home, and the Cubs fell 5-4.

Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Not a whole lot from this one, folks! The Pelicans were held to just three hits on the day, none of which came from the top four in the batting order. The Woodpeckers got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first, then added three more in the bottom of the third. Myrtle Beach went with a bullpen game on the mound, and it didn’t go great. Victor Zarraga and David Bracho each gave up a pair of runs in 2+ innings of work, then Luis Reyes gave up three in two innings. Flush this one, win a game on Saturday!
