Jimbo Fisher is 59 years old now, but the former championship-winning college football coach believes another national title is still in his future.
In a Sports Business Journal article on Friday, Fisher was adamant that his days and nights on the sidelines aren’t over quite yet.
“I still think I can go win the national championship somewhere. I truly believe that,” said Fisher.
Maybe that’s because Fisher has already been to the mountaintop of the sport, having led Florida State to the national championship in 2013. He was the head coach at FSU from 2010-17, going 83-23, so not only has he won it all as a coach, he’s experienced extended success at a Power 4 Conference program.
Fisher moved on to Texas A&M in 2018, going 45-25 in 6 seasons in College Station, so once again success was achieved at a big-time program for Fisher.
And now?
Well, after getting a more than $76 million buyout from Texas A&M, Fisher is certainly still in the college football orbit. He struck a deal to work at ACC Network back in July after lengthy discussions, and now he’ll be part of the ESPN network college football machine going forward. Fisher once coached in the ACC, and now he’ll be part of the ESPN network, which extended its ACC media rights agreement through 2036.
That’s a long time from now — over a decade — and just maybe by that time Fisher will have gotten back into the coaching business that he still believes is an option for him.
For now, Fisher is preparing for a season covering the league he once dominated as a coach.
“I’ve tried to just do it the way I think is right,” said Fisher in the SBJ article.
Time will tell how long this next phase of Fisher’s life lasts before the coaching itch comes calling again.
