CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs offense has been … less than potent of late, but that’s nothing Coors Field and German Marquez can’t solve, right? RIGHT? Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for the first of three games against the Rockies.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Michael Busch, 1B Kyle Tucker, RF Seiya Suzuki, DH Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Ian Happ, LF Nico Hoerner, 2B Dansby Swanson, SS Matt Shaw, 3B Reese McGuire, CThe Rockies starter, Marquez, has a long history of significant, traditional lefty/righty splits, with lefties doing even more damage than usual against him this season (.392 wOBA).
So once again, you have the typical “lefty-heavy” top of the lineup, including Michael Busch at leadoff. But his presence also paved the way for the rare back-to-back Reese McGuire starts (which has the side benefit of extra rest for Carson Kelly).
Colorado Rockies Lineup:
Mickey Moniak, RF Ezequiel Tovar, SS Hunter Goodman, C Jordan Beck, LF Brenton Doyle, CF Kyle Karros, 3B Warming Bernabel, 1B Yanquiel Fernandez, DH Orlando Arcia, 2BPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Cade Horton, RHP
Well, here’s the good news: After an early, blister-induced exit against the Brewers two starts back, Cade Horton came back out and shut down the Angels in one of his best starts of the year: 6.0 IP, 3H, 0ER, 1BB, 7K. In fact, that start was so good (and came after such an impressive stretch) that Horton has effectively become the front-runner for NL Rookie of the Year honors.
The bad news is that Cade Horton has never pitched in Colorado, and that can be a bit of an issue. Outside of Coors Field itself, the environmental factors in Denver can often mess with a pitcher’s repertoire in unexpected ways. Veterans might be prepared for that and adjust ahead of time. But rookies? Who knows! Obviously, this won’t be a “surprise” to Horton, but he’s the guy out there who may have to learn some lessons on the fly.
Fortunately, the 2025 Rockies are legitimately terrible against right-handed pitchers (77 wRC+). Lefties too, I suppose, though it’s less relevant.
Mostly, I just want the Cubs lineup to score enough runs so that the Cubs can take Horton out early to keep preserving his arm for more important games later this year.
Colorado Rockies: German Marquez, RHP
Once upon a time, German Marquez was a pretty solid pitcher, and you might recognize his name because of that impressive run from 2018-2021. But he hasn’t been that guy for a while. In short, he had a meh season in 2022 and then various injuries (plus Tommy John surgery) held him to just 5 total starts between 2023-2024.
He has made 20 starts so far this season (5.67 ERA), but has been out with a biceps injury since July 20. Which means tonight is the first start back of a guy who has been awful this year and otherwise not on the mound over the prior two seasons. Bottom line there? The Cubs need to hit him hard and early. There’s really no reason for him to frustrate this lineup … which basically just means it’ll be extra frustrating for us if he does.
