Are you in a household that lives on the cutting edge of technology and is always looking for a new way to innovate the newest and best products into your daily life? Well, with the Aqara smart home products, you are given an opportunity to integrate smart home capabilities with a sleek and modern appearance with their new light switch H2 to help you stand out from the crowd. Let’s dive in and see if this is the switch you were looking for.

Overview & Design

The Aqara Light Switch H2 is a modern in-wall smart switch available in configurations ranging from 2-button/1-channel to 4-button/2-channel setups, compatible with EU or US wiring standards. Designed to fit standard System 55 frames, the Aqara Light Switch H2’s clean and minimal aesthetic is matched by responsive and tactile, clicky buttons that help you know when you are pressing the buttons.

    Installation & Wiring Flexibility.

A standout feature is its dual wiring support; the H2 works whether or not your wall box includes a neutral wire. This flexibility allows easier retrofits without major electrical rewiring. However, functionality varies. Only with a neutral connection do you get energy monitoring and advanced automation features. The US version is rated for a maximum of 10 amps resistive load, so keep that in mind when setting up.

    Connectivity & Ecosystem Integration.

The H2 supports Thread (Matter) and Zigbee protocols.

Matter over Thread enables direct integration with Apple Home, Google Home, Home Assistant, and Alexa—without an Aqara hub. It exposes switch states and click events but lacks full customization. Zigbee mode (requires Aqara hub) unlocks full capabilities power monitoring (if neutral is wired), button automation, LED settings, MARS technology (ensuring compatibility with different load types), overheat/overload protection, and switch detachment.

Switching between modes is done via firmware flashing through the Aqara app and requires careful following of setup steps. The setup can be tricky especially switching to Zigbee mode on H2 if your hub doesn’t support Matter.

    Buttons & Automation

The top buttons control channel power directly (e.g. turning lights on/off). The bottom buttons can act as wireless triggers configurable for scene control, automations, or toggling other smart devices. Button actions support single, double, and long-press in Zigbee mode. Notably, when using Thread/Matter, bottom button customization is available, but the top buttons still toggle power alongside any scene commands, no way to detach them.

    Performance & Voice Control.

Once set up via Zigbee with an Aqara hub, the H2 performs reliably. Button presses feel solid and responsive, and you can create automations and voice control flows via Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri (through Apple Home), or Home Assistant.

    Price.

You can find the Aqara Light Switch H2 on Amazon for a list price between $44.99 and $54.99, depending on which channel you choose, or you can also head over to Aqara’s main webpage and find them for the same prices. The only difference is that Aqara offers you a multi-purchase discount: when ordering 3, you get 10% off, and when ordering 6, you get 15% off.

    User Experience.

I have used a fair amount of smart switches but was excited to give the Aqara a try when I found out I could have a button on my wall that can control my smart devices. So basically what that means is that if you have a smart device that links through Matter or Apple or Aqara hub, you can set up a command that uses those auxiliary switches (not the top one) to power the connected devices.

That also being said, you can completely control what happens to all connected devices with a touch of a button on your phone using the Aqara app or Apple HomeKit, but options may be slightly limited when using a third-party app. With the two buttons, I have it set up to turn on the main light in my craft room, and the lower button I have set to just be an on and off button for the light in the closet.

In my closet, I have my 3D printers and such, so that light often gets left on. The way I managed that was I installed an Aqara LED smart bulb into the light socket and then just left the light switch on in there. By doing so, it gives me complete control over that light in there, either by using the app or the switch by the door. I will have to say the setup wasn’t as easy as I would have liked. The instructions on installing the switch were great, but when it came to the app integrations, that took a little bit of time and patience to figure out fully, and I’m still sure I am missing something when it comes to using it to the full extent of its abilities.

That being said, now that I have it set up and all connected, things seem to be working seamlessly with very little lag between the switch and the operation of the devices. I haven’t installed the four-button switch yet as I’m unsure of what room I’d like to put it in. I’m thinking of my bedroom so that way I can control things like the living room lights and even unlocking and locking my smart door lock. This really is the beginning of a very techy and app-integrated smart home.

    Best For Whom?

The Aqara Light Switch H2 shines in Aqara-centric smart homes, especially if you wish to combine modern Matter support with full Zigbee feature sets using an Aqara hub (like the M3). It’s a solid choice for smart-home users who want a smart switch with automation flexibility, energy monitoring, and safe electrical operation, all at a reasonable cost.

    Overall Verdict.

The Aqara Light Switch H2 is a powerful yet affordable solution that bridges traditional electrical wiring and smart home automation with dual wireless mode support and robust safety features. While its real power shines in the Zigbee-enabled Aqara ecosystem, its Matter mode offers future-proof simplicity for cross-platform use. The trade-offs are some automation complexity and occasional latency, meaning it’s best suited for users ready to navigate a slightly complex setup.

If you value versatility, safety, and affordability, the H2 is a standout contender in the smart switch landscape. I know I am happy with mine, and once the learning curve was over, it has been much easier to navigate. Thank you so much for reading, and I hope I was able to help you choose your next home automation.
