BOTR backstroker for the class of 2026 Macey deGroot has sent her verbal commitment to the University of Arizona for the fall of 2026

deGroot attends Clear Springs High School in League City, Texas. At the 6A High School State Championships, she finished 5th in the 100 free (50.71) and 2nd in the 100 back (53.52). Both swims were new personal best times.
Recently, she competed at the NCSA Summer Championships for her club team, Sharks Swim Club. There, she qualified for finals in the 50 back (11th – 30.16) and the 200 back (10th – 2:17.58).
In August, deGroot made it onto our class of 2026 rankings as one of our BOTR backstrokers after she saw some significant drops this season, dropping two seconds in the 200 back and one second in the 100 back.

100 back- 53.52 200 back- 1:56.85 200 free- 1:50.49 200 IM- 2:04.56Arizona is coming off a very strong season last year, finishing 2nd in the Big 12, but they were still more than 400 points back of the 1st place ASU team, but deGroot will be a large help in accomplishing that.
With her times from last year, deGroot would have been an ‘A’ finalist in the 100 backstroke and just barely a ‘B’ finalist in the 200 at the 2025 Big 12 Championships. She would have come in behind Kayman Neal and Paige Armstrong in both events for the Wildcats, but Armstrong will be a senior this year and will graduate before deGroot arrives on campus.
She doesn’t have a solid 3rd event at the moment, but her 200 free and her 200 IM could both be solid contenders with her sitting just outside of scoring range in both events.
