‘Serial offender’ arrested after being accused of stealing from store in Henrietta

HENRIETTA, N.Y. — A 58-year-old man that sparked a manhunt in late July after deputies say the man stole from stores near Brockport is facing more charges after being accused of stealing from a store in Henrietta.

Deputies say on Aug. 27, Christopher Cole, who they say is a “serial offender,” was seen trespassing on Home Depot property on Jefferson Road by Home Depot Loss Prevention at around 3:30 p.m.

The employee followed Cole to Dick’s Sporting Goods, where deputies say he was seen loading a duffel bag with merchandise, and didn’t pay for any of it.

A Dick’s employee and the loss prevention employee tried to stop Cole, but he spit in the loss prevention employee’s face, deputies say.

Deputies say they then responded and tried to make contact with Cole, who then fled on foot to Bob’s Furniture. They say he kept trying to run away while they ordered him to stop multiple times.

Cole was later apprehended and detained by deputies. He was charged with the following:

Petit larceny        Criminal possession of a controlled substance in the second degree        Resisting arrest        Trespass (violation)        Harassment in the second degree (violation)

Cole was remanded to the Monroe County Jail held on a $7,500 cash bail, $20,000 bond.

Back on Aug. 21, Cole appeared in court where a judge used a change to bail reform called “harm in harm” to get bail against him.

Cole told the judge in court that his house just burned down, his dog was in his car, he has COVID and he was desperate. So the judge let him go to deal with his house and dog, but had to surrender back in one week.

News10NBC’s Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean spoke to Cole after his court appearance, where he said he was “trying to do the right thing” and that he was struggling.

Here is a timeline of Cole’s offenses and arrests, provided by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office:

July 23, 2025 – Sweden Walmart Larceny (manhunt and subsequent arrest)

July 30, 2025 – Identified as suspect in petit larceny from Penfield Tops (stole $753.51 worth of merchandise). Warrant requested. Penfield court planned to arraign Cole on this charge (instead of issuing warrant) on Aug. 27 because he was supposed to appear on a different previous petit larceny in Penfield on Aug. 27.

Aug. 6, 2025 – Sweden court appearance on Aug. 6 was adjourned to Aug. 20 for a harm-in-harm hearing.

Aug. 20, 2025 – Appeared in Sweden court – Sweden court again adjourned the hearing to Aug. 27.

Aug. 27, 2025– Cole doesn’t appear in Penfield or Sweden Courts, instead commits several offenses in Henrietta.

Aug. 28, 2025 – Cole arraigned on charges committed in Henrietta.

The PROTECT ACT is necessary for cases involving serial offenders, like Christopher Cole. We need a dangerousness standard and a repeat offender standard! Not to mention, it is costly for all of us to continue to capture and arrest these known repeat offenders.Christopher Cole… pic.twitter.com/taZNFcJq2H
