For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Summer Juniors qualifier Sam Hennenfent has verbally committed to join the Duke class of 2030.
‘I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at Duke University. Thank you to Coach Brian and all of the coaching staff at Duke for giving me this amazing opportunity, and a special thank you to my coach Tom and my Tsunami teammates for helping me become the swimmer and person I am today. Lastly, thank you to my parents and brother for supporting me throughout my swimming journey. I am looking forward towards the future! Dukes up”
Hennenfent attends Staley High School in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was the State Champion in the 500 freestyle at last year’s Class 2 Meet, touching in 4:30.05. He is also a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.
He swims for the Tsunami Swim Team of Kansas City, and he recently competed at the 2025 Summer Junior Nationals. His highest finish at the meet came in the form of a 16th place in the 1500 freestyle with his time of 15:47.51. He also finished 18th in the 800 (8:14.87), 36th in the 400 IM (4:31.91), and 80th in the 400 free (4:04.73).
At the Speedo Sectionals in Columbia in March, Hennenfent set new personal best times en route to four top-eight finishes. He was 3rd in the 1650 (15:15.11), 5th in the 500 (4:29.98), 6th in the 200 fly (1:54.63), and 6th in the 400 IM (3:55.72). He also won the 1000 freestyle in 9:12.39.
Hennenfent’s Personal Best Times (SCY)
500 free- 4:29.98 1650 free- 15:15.11 400 IM- 3:55.72After finishing 11th at the 2025 ACC Championships, Duke is looking to move up in the rankings with their men’s team in the coming years, and Hennenfent will be a strong recruit to help that happen.
With a whole year of high school left, Hennenfent has already swam a time in the 1650 that would score in the top 16 at the ACC Conference Championships. His 15:15.11 would have been more than 15 seconds faster than any swimmer on Duke’s team last year and would have been 15th at ACCs, just ahead of Georgia Tech’s Ben Gerhard.
He is outside of scoring position in the 500 (4:20.80) and the 400 IM (3:47.80), but his times would still rank third and fifth on last season’s Duke roster, respectively.
