Chicago Cubs Second Rounder Kane Kepley Getting Some Buzz

Chicago Cubs outfield prospect Kane Kepley has been setting Low-A on fire, hitting .357/.516/.529/212 wRC+ through his first 93 pro plate appearances. He’s gonna need to get the bump to High-A South Bend before this season is over.

Kepley last night hit his second homer in his first 19 games:

Baseball America looked at the top-30 org prospects who have made their debuts since the draft, and Cubs second round outfielder Kane Kepley came in for some especially high praise:

“Kepley has arguably been the most impressive debut hitter thus far. He leads all draftees with 24 hits, 33 total bases and 12 steals. His 1.042 OPS is the second best of any hitter with at least 50 plate appearances behind only Mason Neville (more on him below) and he’s reached base safely in all 18 games he’s played in. His plate discipline was a standout trait for him as North Carolina’s leadoff hitter this spring and that has carried over to his initial pro sample as well, with 16 walks and just 10 strikeouts. He’s played 11 games in center field, four games in right field and gotten into the lineup three times as the DH.”

And that was before the home run he hit last night.

Although it’s good to see, Kepley’s ability to hit in the lower-levels of the minors was unlikely to be a stumbling block. He has superior bat-handling ability, good plate-discipline, and speed. That combination of skills pretty much always puts up good numbers at the lowest levels, typically driven by huge BABIPs, huge walk rates, and tiny strikeout rates (check on all three counts for Kepley).

What you need to see, and what the Cubs were likely betting on when they used such a high pick on this profile, is that the power either takes a step forward, or at least holds steady even as the pitching improves. It isn’t that you expect Kepley to become a 15+ homer guy, or even necessarily need lots of homers for his profile to succeed. Instead, he has to have enough power to keep pitchers and defenses honest. Without it, the walks evaporate, the defense cheats enough to really drive down the BABIP, and the overall productivity gets squeezed at all ends at the higher levels.

That is all to say, I love seeing over-the-fence home-run power from a guy like Kepley. You want to know that it’s in there. As a brand-new professional, and just 21 years old, you can project a little physical and power development from here. So if he already has some in the bag naturally, that’s a good sign for his ability to keep producing decent BABIPs and walk rates as he climbs the ladder, as those will always be key factors in his success.
