Triple-A Iowa Cubs

A day after being shut out, the Iowa Cubs’ lineup bounced back in a big way with an 11-9 win over Las Vegas. Iowa got at least one hit from everyone in the starting lineup, and mult-hit games from four players, one of which was Carlos Pérez, who blasted two home runs on the evening.

The first few innings of this one were a bit of a wild back-and-forth. Las Vegas jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first, the second saw the Cubs score four and the Aviators score a run, and in the third, the Cubs dropped four more and the Aviators put up a five-run frame. So after just three innings, we had ourselves an 8-8 tie!

The scoring took a break until the eighth when Ben Cowles took home on a wild pitch, and then Moises Ballesteros drove in a run with an RBI single, making it 10-8. After the Aviators got one back in the bottom half, Carlos Pérez drove his second homer of the game in the ninth to make it 11-9, which was the final.

    Notable Performances

    Carlos Pérez | 2-5, 2 HR, 3 R, 3 RBI Ben Cowles | 3-4, 3 R Forrest Wall | 2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B

FINAL: Cubs 11, Aviators 9 | Box Score

    Double-A Knoxville Smokies

Walker Powell allowed one run in the bottom of the first, but then kept the Barons off the board for the rest of his outing. Trailing 1-0 at the top of the sixth, Pedro Ramirez evened the game up a 1-1 with a solo home run, and after one more inning of work, Powell’s solid night came to an end with the score tied.

In the seventh, Knoxville took its first lead of the game. With one out and runners on the corners, Andy Garriola came up with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. The game stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth when, unfortunately, the wheels fell off for the Smokies.

After tossing a scoreless seventh, Zac Leigh again took the mound in the eighth. The frame started out with an error by Andy Garriola that put the leadoff man on, followed by a hit batter and a walk. The bases were loaded with no one out, and not a single hit was recorded by the Barons. Mitchell Tyranski took over and got two outs, but also hit another batter to bring in the tying run. However, the Barons broke the game wide open with a bases-clearing triple followed by an RBI double, making it 6-2.

    Notable Performances

    Pedro Ramirez | 1-4, HR Walker Powell | 6.0 IP, 4 H, ER, 4 K, 0 BB Jordan Nwogu | 2-3, SB

FINAL: Barons 6, Smokies 2 | Box Score

    High-A South Bend Cubs

South Bend had a rough go of it on Wednesday. The Chiefs put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning, and while that was all they would end up needing, they didn’t stop there! Peoria added one more in the fourth to make it 5-0, then blew the game wide open in the sixth with a five-run frame, putting the score at 10-0. The Cubs finally got on the board in the seventh inning when Brian Kalmer hit a two-run homer, but that was all for their scoring, and this one ended with a 10-2 final.

    Notable Performances

    Brian Kalmer | 1-4, HR, 2 RBI Cam Sisneros | 1-3, BB Edgar Alvarez | 1-4, R

FINAL: Chiefs 10, Cubs 2 | Box Score

    Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Pelicans jumped out to an early lead in their Wednesday matchup with Fayetteville and held on for a solid win. Myrtle Beach got on the board first in the top of the second with a three-run frame. Eli Lovich put the Pelicans on the board with an RBI groundout, and Christian Olivo and Ty Southisene each followed with RBI singles. After the Woodpeckers got one back in the bottom half, Matt Halbach again made it a three-run lead with a homer in the third.

The Pelicans went with a bullpen game in this one. Kevin Camacho, Thomas Mangus, and Noah Edders combined to toss six innings of one-run ball.

With the score still 4-1 in the seventh, Kane Kepley advanced the lead to 5-1 with a one-out, solo home run of his own. Fayetteville did cut it to 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh, but the bullpen held it down with Mathew Peters picking up the save.

    Notable Performances
