Grimsby goalkeeper Christy Pym admitted it was ‘bittersweet’ after dumping his beloved Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup.
Pym played a crucial part in the Mariners’ historic upset on Wednesday night, as they beat Man United 12-11 on penalties.
The League Two side were 2-0 up against the Red Devils at half time before seeing their two-goal lead disappear late on.
United then looked favourites to turn the game around and progress, but Bryan Mbuemo‘s missed penalty put Grimsby through.
Blundell Park was sent into pandemonium and fans invaded the pitch, as mass celebrations ensued after a famous win.
However, goalkeeper Pym, who made seven saves during the game before saving and scoring a penalty in the shootout, was left slightly less excited by the outcome as he’s an avid Man United supporter.
Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, the Grimsby shotstopper revealed: “Unfortunately, at the minute, I am [a Man United fan].
“It’s a tough time for them at the minute and thankfully we heaped a bit more misery on them.
“It was bittersweet at the end, I guess.”
Pym added: “It’s up there [as the best game I’ve played in].
“I think we should have put it to bed earlier, not just the disallowed goal, but we had a decent chance after half time. It’s been the story of our season, creating chances and putting teams to bed.
“But any win against Man United, no matter how it comes, is special.”
Pym made seven saves, saved a penalty and scored a penalty in the tieGettyOnana nightmare
Andre Onana made his first appearance of the season for Man United against Grimsby, but things went horribly wrong.
A failed punch led to the second goal for United’s League Two opposition, before he let in 12 penalties – three of which he got a hand to but couldn’t manage to keep out.
It has meant that Onana has faced huge criticism since the game and Pym discussed his opposing ‘keeper’s form.
“I didn’t get chance to chat to him, all the fans ran onto the pitch and swarmed us, so it was a bit crazy after,” Pym said.
“Being a goalkeeper is a lonely position, and I’ve had spells at clubs where it doesn’t go well and it’s hard to get that form back, confidence is a big thing.
“He’s not there by chance, they’ve obviously seen something in him to sign him, it’s just getting that confidence back, whether that be at United or somewhere else.”

Pym also told talkSPORT that Grimsby boss David Artell had been drilling into his players to go for it against Man United.
The Mariners certainly did that, pressing high and having 10 shots against their Premier League giant opponents.
“He said it all week to be fair, be brave and have a right go at them, the pressure is on them,” Pym explained.
“With them not in Europe, they need to win a trophy, so all the pressure was on them.
“If you sit back for 90 minutes, with the quality that they do have, you’re going to get punished.
“The best way to defend sometimes is to attack.”
Where do Grimsby go from here?
Grimsby will now be riding at an all-time high after knocking out Man United and reaching the Carabao Cup third round.
And Pym is hoping that his side, who were drawn to face Sheffield Wednesday in the next round, can build on that result.
He said: “We’ve got a big couple of games coming up in the league…we’ve started the season really well, we’ve not lost yet.
“So it’s just trying to keep that form going and momentum going.
“The adrenaline from that game last night…we have to make sure that Saturday [against Bristol Rovers] is not a flat performance.
“We’ve got a lot of pace and especially in our league, that’s going to hurt a lot of our opposition.”
