The Indian Test batting, which was sensational in the England Test series, is surely missing their former reliable no. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara. After all, he was best-ever in the country, since Rahul Dravid and went on to score 6,529 runs at the position. This series, too, the likes of Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan were tried, but honestly, they weren’t any good either.
Yes, they will get their chances in the upcoming series’, but now with the domestic season starting with the Duleep Trophy 2025, it is imperative keep an eye out for the youngsters. In fact, one such batter — who primarily bats No.3 & No. 4 has started scoring runs. And it is none other than Vidarbha batter Danish Malewar.
Playing for the Central Zone, against the North East Zone, Malewar did slam a 100. But should the ton really count, since it came against visibly weaker side? Perhaps yes. For all we know, this could just be the starter before the main course. It is still way to early, to even consider him as a contender for now, but Danish Malewar is certainly the one to watch out for in the Duleep Trophy, and then subsequently in the Ranji Trophy.
Much in the Pujara mould, in his very first FC season last year, Malewar played 9 matches and went on to accumulate 783 runs at an average of 52. That had two tons and six fifties as well, with a strike-rate of 51. The SR shows, he is a grafter, and takes his time to build his innings, something that defined Pujara, and even Dravid.
Talking about his two tons in the Ranji — the first one was against Gujarat that had quality domestic bowlers like Arzan Nagwaswalla and Tejas Patel. While the second was against finalists Kerala where he scored 153 and 73 in a winning cause. That team too had Eden Apple Tom, MD Nidheesh and wily Jalaj Saxena
Once again, much shouldn’t be made out of this ton against the North East Zone alone, but Danish Malewar should be treated as the one to watch out for.
