When attending college on a large campus, students may look for alternative forms of transportation to get them to their destination without walking long distances. Buses, electric scooters and bicycles are all popular options for speeding up a lengthy commute, but for students, there’s another vehicle that has managed to set itself apart: the golf cart.
The first golf cart taxi service to establish itself at The University of Alabama was Joyride in 2015. Since then, other brands have popped up in the area to offer students rides to locations in and around campus.
Cindy Clark, the general manager of Joyride Tuscaloosa, said that prior to Joyride’s establishment, it was obvious there was something missing from the types of transportation offered on campus.
“Before we opened in 2015, many students struggled navigating across town, and reserving Ubers was difficult because they weren’t as prevalent,” Clark said. “We brought students a speedy, fun, and inexpensive way to get around.”
Ten years after their founding, Clark said that Joyride has the “largest, most reputable fleet in town.” They also offer a variety of services including campus tours, graduation transportation photo opportunities and bar crawls.
Another golf cart taxi service in the Tuscaloosa area is Solar Chauffeur, which opened in 2023 and was founded by former Alabama wide receiver Brandon Gibson. Despite emerging in the market after Joyride and functioning within the same limited area, Solar Chauffeur has not been deterred by rival services in Tuscaloosa.
“Healthy competition makes everyone operate at their highest potential,” Gibson said. “What sets us apart is the experience.”
From rider accommodations like phone charging and music on carts to weekly safety checks to ensure their vehicles run smoothly, Gibson said Solar Chauffeur tries its best to make sure students feel cared for.
“We place a high standard on ourselves, and when we don’t meet it we take care of customers with refunds or free rides. Our mindset is to under-promise and over-deliver,” Gibson said.
In order to request a ride from either Solar Chauffeur or Joyride, students can contact the companies through their mobile apps or GroupMe. Both services offer standard ride rates as well as semester passes that ensure prepaid rides around campus.
When considering Joyride, students have the option of booking a standard Joyride for five passengers or a Joyride XL for seven passengers. Similarly, Solar Chauffeur’s tiered VIP Service Model gives students flexibility in what kind of ride they need.
