Viral post prompts bigger questions about Gen Z fashion trends.

Students at The University of Alabama were featured in the cover photo of an article published by the New York Post last November. The photo featured nine girls all seemingly wearing the same outfit on the Strip.

The article was inspired by a post on X, where the image originated, with the caption “You’ll never find another me.” sparked of questions about Gen Z’s fashion sense, or lack thereof.

“Using an image of a group of girls dressed the same way as a generalized statement about Gen Z fashion is reductive and clickbait-y,” said Brian Taylor, chair of the Department of Clothing, Textiles and Interior Design. “Light-wash jeans are especially popular right now, and can be dressed up or down. I wore a pair to work today with black loafers.”

Gen Z is known for flocking to fashion trends. This process is only expedited on a college campus as people rush to find styles that are in.

These similarities in Gen Z style can be attributed to social media and the ability of a trend to gain motion quickly. Also, the rise of fast fashion sites like Shein and Fashion Nova has given Gen Z quick and easy access to all sorts of styles at much lower prices, while sacrificing the higher quality of the popular name brands.

“I think social media has a pretty significant impact on what people wear when going out,” said Celie Cowart, a junior majoring in marine science. “New trends and styles are discovered on most platforms, which are generally promoted by influencers.”

While fast fashion plays a major role in the promotion of trends, another group of Gen Z fashionistas focuses on a different trend: the sustainability of their clothing.

Thrifting has become an outlet for Gen Z with a plethora of benefits, such as reviving styles that were once trendy and saving money while also promoting environmentally friendly practices.

“Much of Gen Z’s clothing is custom or coded,” Taylor said. “Thrifting has also become both a fashion statement and an eco-conscious choice in their wardrobes.”

These trends in thrifting have translated to older styles becoming popular once again, allowing Gen Z to style pieces of clothing that aren’t new but are in style.

“Last year, I remember micro shorts, especially the cheetah print ones, being the big trend, and I would always see someone wearing them,” Cowart said.

Gen Z Americans do stand out in comparison to the groups that came before for many reasons, whether it’s their inspiration from previous generations or the bold new styles cycling through.

“Their style differs from past generations through its personalization, sustainability focus, and hybrid aesthetics,” Taylor said. “It’s deeply rooted in nostalgia but reinterpreted with irony and new meaning.”
