Former Alabama men’s golfer Justin Thomas made the U.S. Ryder Cup team as the first captain’s pick, captain Keegan Bradley announced Wednesday morning.
The Ryder Cup will take place Sept. 26-28 at Bethpage Black, one of the most challenging golf courses in the world, just 35 miles outside of New York City.
“It’s probably a good thing that these events happen every so often because they do make them that much more special,” Thomas said.
Thomas is a two-time major champion at the 2017 and 2022 PGA Championships. He is a former No. 1-ranked golfer in the world, now ranked No. 5, and will be competing in his fourth Ryder Cup, the most of any player on the U.S. team this year.
Thomas won earlier this year at the RBC Heritage in South Carolina on Easter Sunday, edging out Andrew Novak in a playoff. That win marked Thomas’s 16th win on the PGA Tour.
“Our first captain’s pick is Justin Thomas,” Bradley said. “Justin is the heartbeat of our team. He had an amazing win at RBC this year. He’s the fifth-ranked player in the world. This guy was born to play Ryder Cups, and specifically, I think at Bethpage Black.”
In Thomas’ time with the Crimson Tide from 2011 to 2013, he was the first Alabama golfer to win the Haskin Award, which goes to the top freshman every year. He also received the Jack Nicklaus Award, presented annually to the top college golfer. Thomas was a key part of the Crimson Tide’s run to a national championship in his final year of college in 2013.
Until last year’s Presidents Cup, Thomas had competed in six consecutive team events between the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup. In Thomas’ four Ryder Cup appearances, he has a record of 7-4-2 and a singles record of 3-0. He also went 4-0 in the 2023 Presidents Cup and made a dramatic putt in 2019 when he teamed up with Tiger Woods to win their match, which was key in shifting the momentum back in the U.S. direction and helped the U.S. win the 2019 Presidents Cup.
“I would go first to what I love so much about them,” Thomas said. “What happened last year is what it is, it’s a very, very deep competition that the U.S. is trying to compete against and play to qualify for these team events every year. And I just, I really enjoy them. I think they, I’ve developed some unbelievable friendships in these events.”
With all Thomas’ success in team events during his PGA Tour career, there was little doubt he was the right man for the job. He has made lifelong friendships in these team events and will continue to do so as long as he can.
“These are guys that we obviously are all very friendly and cordial and see each other all the time, but it’s just a totally different vibe when you’re there,” Thomas said. “You’re battling for each other, playing for each other, not just for yourself. It’s an opportunity to get to know them, their wives, families, whatever it may be.”
