After nearly three months of summer break, classes started back last week. This was my first long summer holiday. Back home in Nepal, we don’t have a break this long because we follow a different academic calendar, known as the Bikram Sambat Nepali calendar. It is approximately 56 years and 8 months ahead of the English calendar. Even though we get holidays during our festivals, like Dashain and Tihar, it is usually spent in festivities rather than resting.
However, this summer taught me a lot about resting and fulfilling my responsibilities as I navigated a schedule different from the academic year. I learned how to work hard, but also to take breaks. This summer was one of growth, reflection and preparation for the year ahead.
After a year of juggling studies, recreation, friendships, relationships, budgeting, and planning, it was essential for us as students to take a moment to rejoice over the summer to find the energy for starting another year strong. Besides students, teachers and faculty who work for the university also deserved the rest after a year of giving to the university and its students. Making the most of summer is not just about being productive, but also about ensuring recovery from the stress of the academic year. Even though we get smaller breaks throughout the year, the anxiety from classes, assignments, tests and examinations doesn’t end. As students, we are constantly putting ourselves under pressure to do more – whether it be extracurriculars, school work, research or projects. Summer provides us with a good chance to unwind and work on meaningful things even outside of school.
I was excited to spend time away from schoolwork as a summer Residential Advisor, an opportunity that afforded me a heart full of memories. Though the job had its ups and downs, I met incredible coworkers who became close friends, incoming freshmen with great potential, kind and understanding parents, hardworking and funny Community Directors, CDs, who always looked out for us, and supportive managers who made us feel understood and valued throughout our time as RAs. From touring dorm rooms during walkthroughs to responding to lockouts in the middle of the night across campus, all of us summer RAs collected stories we’ll be telling for years.
Although I was working and getting paid, I was also enjoying myself. My RA friends and I went out for dinners and movie nights often, and that taught me how to balance work alongside fun.
Over this break, I also interviewed for a position in Professor Tibor Szilvasi’s lab for the upcoming academic year. It wasn’t something I had planned, but I’m incredibly fortunate to have been offered the opportunity. As a computer science major, I’m excited to work in a lab where I can challenge myself and grow. I’m looking forward to learning from people in my field and building new connections. I assisted with some computer science and cybersecurity advisor interviews, which reassured me that the student voice was heard in the process of selecting advisors. This part of my summer break made me feel like I was utilizing my time and doing something good for my future, which comes hand-in-hand with enjoyment.
Between registering for classes, preparing for the semester and taking on new responsibilities, I also made time for myself. I journaled, watched shows, cooked, went out with people I love, and talked to my family back home. I had time and space to rest and reset before jumping back into the busy routine. I reflected on the past year, on where I grew and where I fell short, and I let myself enjoy the quiet moments without always needing to be productive. I even joined the recreation center for a month and kept a solid workout streak going. Making sure that I was working towards self-care gave a boost to my physical, emotional and social health.
One of my favorite things about the break was the calm of campus. Usually buzzing with people, the University had a rare, peaceful energy during the summer. As someone who finds joy in calm over chaos, I was happy every time I stepped outside. Even though there were moments I felt like I could have done more, I now realize I did just enough, and that the rest was necessary to feel recharged and ready for the new semester.
