The Minnesota Catholic church and school where two children were killed when a gunman opened fire Wednesday morning released a statement to its parish and school community, calling the incident an “impossible situation.”
“No words can capture what we have gone through, what we are going through, and what we will go through in the coming days and weeks. But we will navigate this – together,” the Annunciation Catholic School said in a statement to the school and parish community, signed by school Principal Matthew DeBoer and Pastor Father Dennis Zehren.
Annunciation Catholic School, located at 509 W. 54th St. on the south side of the city, was in an all-school Mass at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday when a gunman came up from the outside of the building and began firing a rifle through the church’s windows as children sat in pews during the Mass.
“Within seconds” of the when the gunman began shooting, their “heroic staff moved students under the pews,” Annunciation said in the statement.
“Tragically, we lost two of our beloved students before the scene was secured,” Annunciation said.
A number of children and parishioners were wounded, the church said, and they were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
All staff are physically safe and accounted for, the church added.
“Please lift up these families and these children in prayer and surround them and each other with your love during this difficult time,” the statement said.
Annunciation said it will release more information regarding when school will resume over the weekend., adding that investigators are still on the school’s campus and will be “for some time.” It will also be communication with the community about support services “at a later time.”
“In this time of darkness, let us commit to being the Light to our children, each other and our community. We will rebuild our future filled with hope – together,” the statement said.
According to its website, Annunciation School is a Catholic Parish educational institution that serves more than 430 students ranging from pre-K to eighth grade.
Officials confirmed two children, ages 8 and 10, and the alleged gunman, were killed. Seventeen others were injured, 14 of which are children, with multiple victims remaining in critical condition.
Hennepin Healthcare confirmed it received numerous patients between the ages of 6 and 14.
Children’s Minnesota said they have seven children being treated at their facility.
“Today, seven children between ages 9-16 were admitted to our hospital for care as a result of the tragic incident this morning,” the hospital said in a statement. “One patient has been discharged. Our thoughts are with all the victims, their families and loved ones in our communities who are impacted by yet another senseless act of violence.”
A 9:29 a.m. post from the City of Minneapolis said there was no active threat to the community and that the shooter was contained. Officials later confirmed the gunman died a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police have said publicly that the suspect is in their early 20s with a limited criminal history.
In a message posted to social media, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said the school had just welcomed back students and teachers for the 2025-26 school year.
“I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence,” the message said.
