Syrian Interior Ministry prepares to reopen Damascus–Suwayda road

The Syrian Interior Ministry announced on Wednesday, August 27, that it had completed the necessary steps to secure the Damascus–Suwayda highway, in preparation for reopening it to transport and trade after months of closure due to escalating violence that began in mid-July.

In a statement, the ministry said it was committed to meeting the needs of Suwayda residents, ensuring their freedom of movement, and overcoming the impact of the crisis. It added that all procedures were being finalized to guarantee the safety of the road for civilians and trade, describing the effort as part of its “national responsibility to maintain security and stability across Syrian provinces.”

The Damascus–Suwayda road has been closed since March 13 following armed clashes between government forces and Bedouin tribal fighters on one side, and local factions in Suwayda on the other.

With the province under government-imposed military encirclement, humanitarian convoys have continued to enter via the Busra al-Sham and Busra al-Harir crossings in rural Daraa.

    17th aid convoy enters Suwayda

On the same day, a new Syrian Arab Red Crescent aid convoy arrived in Suwayda through the Busra al-Harir crossing.

The convoy included more than 31 trucks carrying medical supplies, health materials, and relief baskets, as well as a truck equipped for street lighting, according to the Suwayda local administration.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa said this was the 17th aid convoy to reach the province, and the first to include a road-lighting truck. Previous convoys mainly carried food and fuel.

He explained that convoys now use the Busra al-Harir crossing due to security tensions at the Busra al-Sham crossing. The Busra al-Harir route, which passes through the town of Izra in rural Daraa, is also closer to the convoys’ assembly point.

All Syrian Arab Red Crescent convoys are escorted by General Security forces until they enter Suwayda.

    Trading accusations

On August 22, Suwayda’s internal security chief, Ahmed al-Dalati, said that several local merchants had declined to receive government-dispatched food and essential goods due to threats from actors inside the province.

In response, the Suwayda Chamber of Commerce issued a statement saying that some merchants who tried to source supplies from Damascus faced extortion at government checkpoints, where they were forced to pay bribes to allow goods through. It described the situation as a “suffocating blockade” preventing regular entry of food and essentials, and demanded that the siege be lifted and access guaranteed.

The Interior Ministry insisted that food deliveries to Suwayda had resumed on August 7 and continued regularly, citing the entry of more than 1,000 tons of goods on August 17, along with vegetables and fruit.

Al-Dalati stressed that internal security forces were fully prepared to secure a stable commercial route to ensure the continued flow of supplies, affirming that roads into Suwayda were safe for this purpose.

    Background of tensions

Suwayda has seen cycles of violence between the Syrian government, Bedouin tribal fighters, and local factions.

The crisis began on July 12 with mutual kidnappings between local factions and residents of Suwayda city’s al-Maqous neighborhood, which has a majority Bedouin population.

The situation escalated into armed clashes, prompting government intervention. However, government forces later withdrew after Israeli airstrikes targeted their positions in Suwayda and Damascus.

Local factions then committed abuses against Bedouins, fueling tribal anger and leading to mobilizations of convoys into the province.
