Survivor Fan-Favorite Honored for Helping Pass California Bill

Survivor star Joe Hunter is being honored for his role in California's new domestic violence legislation.

On Monday, Aug. 25, the Sacramento fire captain was honored by Sacramento elected officials and firefighters for his advocacy, which helped pass a new California domestic violence law. The law seeks to protect future victims of domestic violence and expose potential killers.

During his stint on Survivor 48, the fan-favorite castaway opened up about losing his sister Joanna to domestic violence in 2011. Joanna's death was quickly ruled a suicide by law enforcement, despite family members and domestic violence experts claiming that critical evidence was overlooked.

Hunter wore a domestic violence awareness bracelet throughout his Survivor journey, and admitted he applied because his later sister was a super fan of the show.

The new bill, named Joanna’s Law, aims to prevent suspicious deaths from being wrongfully classified as suicides by giving investigators and family members tools to identity domestic-violence related deaths. Hunter testified in the state legislature on behalf of the law while holding a picture of his sister.

“After losing his beloved sister, he made a choice: a choice to turn unimaginable grief into purpose,” said Isabel Gatdula, a representative from Ashby’s office to The Sacramento Bee. “He became a voice for families across California who felt silenced by flawed investigations. His courage to testify and relive personal pain and fight for justice will save countless lives.”

After placing third on Survivor 48, Hunter returned to Fiji to film Survivor 50: In The Hands Of The Fans this summer, which will air next year on CBS.
