LA JOLLA – The latest news from Friends of Coast Walk Trail in La Jolla is all good.
The 15-year-old nonprofit supporting the trail’s ongoing maintenance and development has just completed an approximately $125,000 repair to the bridge, which is scheduled to reopen to the public on Friday.
Also, a new group, La Jolla Coastal Conservancy, was recently formed to conduct repair and maintenance projects in public park spaces for La Jolla Shoreline Parks. That work is done in an area bounded by Coast Walk Trail on the north end and Whale View Point on the lower end.
Friends of Coast Walk Trail was founded in 2010 to restore and preserve the historic 0.6-mile Coast Walk Trail in La Jolla. The trail’s history dates back over 9,000 years to its use by Native Americans, evolving through development in 1932 as a formal trail and receiving formal recognition as a San Diego Historic Landmark in 1990.
Friends of Coast Walk Trail supports the city’s Transportation Department, working on restoration projects and celebrating the trail’s rich cultural history. The trail is also on the National Registry of Historic Places.

It would have been too big. But doing maintenance repair on the current structure, we have that within our [right of entry] permit to do.”
Noting that Friends of Coast Walk Trail has “a nice board and residents who live along the trail are involved,” Fake added, “[The trail] has turned into building on your success. You can’t get people (to join) unless you show action, and you get a collaborative group.
“The real fun is getting the community engaged in it, from the Eagle Scouts (trail improvement projects), to La Jolla Sunrise Rotary giving us some credibility in getting behind some early projects.”
In a slide-show presentation, Fake noted La Jolla’s coastal parks are a world-class destination, but face serious infrastructure and maintenance challenges.
“City budgets can’t keep pace with repair and upkeep needs as tourism grows,” she said. “Lack of dedicated, sustainable funding impacts safety, environment, accessibility and visitor experience. Without action, the area risks continued deterioration despite its immense community and tourism value.”
Of the new La Jolla Coastal Conservancy, Fake said it “offers a community-driven solution to generate funds and prioritize improvements. It builds on successful past public/private partnerships and visible results in La Jolla.”
Bob Evans, president of La Jolla Parks & Beaches, Inc., a nonprofit city advisory group on shoreline parks, concurs that the La Jolla Coastal Conservancy is a winning proposition. Though separate, he added Friends of Coast Walk Trail and the new conservancy complement one another in their goals and mission.
“The city’s giving us a five-year, special-use permit that allows us to go in, maintain and work on repairs, fixing existing projects and working on new ones,” he said. “We are incredibly blessed with our natural features, which have made us a worldwide destination for over 100 years. Our grand vision for La Jolla Coastal Conservancy is to use it to maintain and redesign park areas, like Scripps Park, which is in poor condition.”
Fake noted that Friends of Coast Walk Trail gets love from locals and visitors alike. “Once they know this was private money, that the city didn’t do this, they are super appreciative,” she said. “We’ve built a nice support group out there. We’ve had great sponsors.”
