LaNorris Sellers jumped onto the scene last year as a redshirt freshman with the South Carolina Gamecocks. At 6-3 and 240 pounds, Sellers’ frame combined with his quickness and speed make him an athletic freak in the backfield that is hard to tackle when he escapes.
Yet, not every SEC coach feels the same way about Sellers. In a new ESPN feature released Wednesday, Adam Rittenberg talked with coaches and others around the sport to gain intel on some of the more notable quarterbacks throughout college football. One of the quarterbacks focused on was LaNorris Sellers. Most agreed that Sellers can make amazing plays, and they want to see him take the next step in the throwing game. However, one SEC coach didn’t reiterate the same message.
I can’t get behind the LaNorris Sellers hype,” an SEC coach said. “He reminds me of Anthony Richardson, and I know Anthony Richardson went fourth overall [in the NFL draft]. Physically, he’s a freak, but is he a great quarterback?
In his freshman season, Sellers was one of the most exciting quarterbacks in the SEC last year. He threw for 2,534 yards with 18 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, but it was his ability to run the ball that made his game jump out. Sellers rushed for 674 yards last year and found his way to the end zone 7 times. Against Clemson at the end of the season, Sellers rushed 16 times for 166 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Going into his second season as the starting quarterback of the Gamecocks, Sellers will look to take that next step to becoming a solidified great quarterback.
