Roster Thoughts, Why Giving Amegadjie a Chance Makes Sense, Understanding the Cuts, and Other Bears Bullets

I was so locked in to Chicago Bears cut-down day that I had to learn about the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce engagement from this Adam Schefter tweet, which came one minute before fellow NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport shared his news-breaking post. Schefty gets bragging rights on that one.

If you need to play catch-up on the day’s other big news, don’t worry because I’ve got you covered. We tracked all of the team’s roster cuts, highlighted a pair of notable roster moves, and shared some takeaways from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson. And this is what the initial roster looks like:

HERE IT IS: The First 2025 Chicago Bears 53-Man Roster is OUT www.bleachernation.com/bears/2025/0…[image or embed]

    — Bleacher Nation Bears (@bn-bears.bsky.social) August 26, 2025 at 3:29 PM There were no major roster shockers to me. But there were some decisions that made me turn my head and made me go “hmmm…” while stroking my beard. For instance, I would’ve understood it had the team parted ways with offensive lineman Kiran Amegadjie. The Yale product was a player many earmarked as an obvious cut candidate. But I also get why the front office wants this coaching staff to get an extended look at the 2024 third-round pick. Reading Amegadjie’s NFL Draft prospect profiles from Lance Zierlein (NFL Media), Ian Cummings (Pro Football Network), or Kyle Crabbs (Athlon Sports) helps me understand why the Bears didn’t punt on him. Few things grind my gears like football fans clamoring for teams to draft and develop players, but not giving players time to develop. I’d hate giving up on a guy who later bites the Bears in the butt. There might have been a small bit of surprise seeing Tanoh Kpassagnon cut because of his connection to Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen from their time with the New Orleans Saints. But Kpassagnon was a late-summer addition and briefly dealt with an injury during training camp. Rostering him felt like a long shot to me, but I can see him coming back on a practice squad deal. That might be something to keep an eye on after waivers open later this morning. Mandatory Credit: Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports I like that Bears GM Ryan Poles didn’t shy away from cutting defensive tackle Zacch Pickens and wide receiver Tyler Scott. It would have been easy to keep the 2023 draft picks on the roster, point to their prospect status, and hope that a new coaching staff could unlock these players in Year 3. But I think the front office saw enough and decided it was time to pull the plug. It’s not as if Pickens or Scott didn’t have paths to more playing time. They did! However, they didn’t capitalize on those opportunities. And then the Bears decided to sign free agents and draft players who bumped them down the depth chart — and ultimately, off of the roster. A lot of draft picks don’t work out, which is why (1) it is impossible to build solely through the draft and (2) I am an advocate of adding picks whenever possible. Sean Hammond (Tribune) shares four things that were learned about the Bears on roster cut-down deadline day, including updates on the RBs room that saw just one player practicing on Tuesday — D’Andre Swift. Might’ve been the most notable Swift-related news of the day. Hammond also mentions that wide receiver DJ Moore had “a carry here or there.” With just three backs on their roster, it would be genuinely surprising to me if Chicago’s front office doesn’t kick the tires on running backs who hit the waiver wire or free agency. This is clearly a position of need. This is a weird thing to say out loud…

The #Bears have ordered in food and will spend the night in their war room sorting through more than a thousand waiver wire names. GM Ryan Poles admits that part of the job was more fun when the #Bears were rebuilding and they could claim 6 guys.

    — Patrick Finley (@patrickfinley) August 26, 2025 … but also, it is strangely relatable because this is how I feel right now at the end of my fantasy baseball season. I’m currently watching teams pick up quality prospect stashes, which is something I can’t do because I need to use my adds wisely before the start of the playoffs limits our moves from four to two. And because of league rules, anyone added during the playoffs can’t be kept for next season. Oh, woe is me. Trader Lu is making the playoffs. Again. In an offseason in which the Bears focused on upgrading the offensive and defensive lines, it makes sense that those were two of the three position groups that Jason Lieser (Sun-Times) points out now have clarity after roster cut-down day. And yet, my gut says that moves are on the horizon at those positions. I predict there will be a constant churning and burning throughout the year with players coming in for tryouts as the team seeks stability and depth at those spots. With that being said, I think Scott Bair (Marquee) nails it by underscoring that keeping five offensive tackles is A LOT. The Bears are also carrying five edge rushers on their initial roster. Although, it is worth pointing out that Dayo Odeyingbo is someone who is expected to slide inside every now and again. This team needs a big year from its high-profile free-agent signing. Odeyingbo’s production as a member of the Indianapolis Colts was underwhelming, but he has size and tools that suggest there is more to unlock. This is a gamble for Chicago’s front office. I hope it pays off. Position groups I think the Bears will add to before the week is over: Running back, offensive line, defensive line, and cornerback.
