Michael Russo at The Athletic shared a really good Q&A with NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly on Tuesday that touches on a wide range of topics. One item that is specifically interesting is Russo asking about when some of the new elements of the Collective Bargaining Agreement will actually start being enforced — specifically, the shorter term limits on contracts (six years for UFAs signing with a new club, seven years for retained FAs). This is a significant question/answer because of the list of potential free agents going into next summer.
Here’s part of Daly’s answer:
One bucket of items will go into effect as early as this year. One bucket of items will go into effect as of July 1 of next year — so, the league year, the full league year. And then there’s a list of items that don’t go into effect until Sept. 16 of next year.
Russo then notes: “NHLPA assistant executive director Ron Hainsey told Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast that the term limit changes won’t start until Sept. 16, 2026, meaning free agents will be able to sign for seven-year terms next July 1.“
That would mean the Blackhawks’ internal RFAs — a list that includes Connor Bedard, Spencer Knight, Kevin Korchinski — could still sign longer term deals if the two sides agreed that was best for the player and Blackhawks after July 1. Note to self…
Speaking of young guys who need to get paid, still crickets on Wyatt Kaiser. Frank Seravalli was asked about it in a chat on his podcast yesterday and… didn’t really have much of an answer. He admitted he hadn’t given it much thought, but comes back to the number of quality defensemen the Blackhawks have in their system who are seemingly NHL ready — and the reality that, if there are as many as nine NHL defensemen in the system (Frank’s number, not mine), they can only play six. At this point, one has to wonder when something is going to get done, whether that’s a bridge deal or even possibly a trade.I just ask @frank_seravalli if there any update on unsigned RFA Wyatt Kaiser for the #Blackhawks. Thank you taking my question Frank. pic.twitter.com/BGKgdINqtt
