LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Several counties in the Charlotte region simulated Tuesday for the unlikely event of a disaster at the McGuire Nuclear Station in Huntersville.
Mark Howell oversaw the exercise for Lincoln County. He's the emergency management coordinator there.
Leaders from many areas of public life, including law enforcement, EMS, public health and Lincoln County Schools, were on hand at the county's emergency operations center in Lincolnton, which acts as a command center during a real disaster.
They drilled for a hypothetical radioactive leak at the McGuire nuclear plant.
"The nuclear [response] process actually makes us stronger to respond to any kind of disaster," Howell said.
Officials simulated sounding sirens, clearing Lake Norman of boaters, and notifying businesses and schools.
"[We're] making sure we’re sheltering those students in place until we can safely remove them and get them out of that area and communicating that to the parents," Howell said.
The all-hands-on-deck simulation is required by the federal government every two years, so staff from FEMA were there to monitor and grade the county’s response.
"They want to know that we're capable of evacuating people, monitoring them for contamination, and then sheltering them," Howell said.
Mecklenburg, Catawba, Gaston, and Iredell Counties took part in Tuesday’s scenario, too, and they were all also under FEMA monitoring.
Howell says people in the Charlotte region should feel safer knowing this dry run took place.
“I feel confident we passed our test today," he said. "We plan every day to respond to these types of events, and through that planning process, we didn’t find any major shortfalls today, which is a good thing.”
