UNC Aims to Capitalize on ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Interest with New Campus Tour

Carolina’s campus is featured in several episodes of the third season of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” and the UNC Visitors Center is launching a free campus tour inspired by the show.

Now through Sep. 17, the hour-long walking tour will both highlight the spots seen in the Prime Video series and include behind-the-scenes stories from the filming process in 2024.

“Carolina’s campus has long been admired for its beauty and charm, so it’s no surprise that Jenny wanted to return to her alma mater to film the last season of ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty,’” UNC Visitors Center Director Rhonda Beatty said in a release. “We’re excited to invite fans and guests to see these beloved locations in person and discover the magic of Carolina through a new lens.”

“The Summer I Turned Pretty” author and series creator Jenny Han is a UNC alumna, and the tour is both a celebration of the series and a nod to how her creative journey began at Carolina, according to the release. Han was also recognized with an honorary degree during University Day in 2023, celebrating her success for the trilogy and the popular “To All The Boys I Loved Before” series.

Han’s latest coming-of-age streaming series debuted in 2022 and follows Isabel “Belly” Conklin as she navigates a love triangle between two brothers. The first two seasons of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” focused on Belly’s time in high school, and the third begins with her entering college.

The series filmed outside McCorkle Place last summer, inviting hundreds of local fans and community members to be paid extras in the three-day film shoot. Other familiar campus spots like Old East dorm, Morehead Planetarium, and Swain Hall also help make up the show’s fictional “Finch College,” where Belly attends school. The third season premiered on July 16, and the final episode will release on Wednesday, Sep. 17, which is the last day to attend a walking tour.

Guests can register for the free tour at the UNC Visitors Center or its website.
