The Chicago Bears promptly announced their final roster cuts of the preseason shortly after the 3 p.m. CT Tuesday deadline. So let’s take a look at the initial roster that Ben Johnson gets to work with as a first-year head coach.

Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson told reporters that he feels Chicago has one of the best quarterback rooms in the NFL. That room will feature starter Caleb Williams, recently extended backup Tyson Bagent, and wily veteran Case Keenum.
Running Backs (3): D’Andre Swift, Roschon Johnson, Kyle Monangai
The Bears are carrying three running backs upon this initial release of the roster. Swift was the only one practicing on Tuesday, which felt like an ominous sign for Brittain Brown’s chances of making the first 53-man roster. A healthy D’Andre Swift will go a long way toward making me feel good about this group.
Injured reserve, designated for return: Travis Homer
Wide Receivers (6): DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III, Olamide Zaccheaus, Devin Duvernay, Jahdae Walker
Tight Ends (3): Cole Kmet, Colston Loveland, Durham Smythe
Six wide receivers and three tight ends are on the initial Bears roster release. Kudos to undrafted rookie Jahdae Walker, who made the most of his opportunities in training camp practices and the preseason to make the roster. To go from undrafted afterthought to one of 53 players on an NFL roster is a one-in-a-million story. I look forward to seeing what is next for the Texas A&M product.

It might surprise folks to see that Kiran Amegadjie made the cut on the initial roster. But given the uncertainty surrounding the Bears’ offensive tackle situation, I understand why Amegadjie is hanging around through this wave of cuts. Even still, it would not surprise me if another roster shakeup for this group is on the horizon. Stay tuned.
Defensive Lineman (10): Montez Sweat, Grady Jarrett, Gervon Dexter Sr., Dayo Odeyingbo, Andrew Billings, Austin Booker, Shemar Turner, Dominique Robinson, Chris Williams, Daniel Hardy
I am breathing a little easier knowing that defensive end Austin Booker isn’t beginning the year on injured reserve. Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson said Booker was going to miss some time because of an injury he suffered in the team’s preseason win against the Buffalo Bills. Perhaps Booker will be available in an early seaosn game before the team’s Week 5 bye.
Linebackers (5): Tremaine Edmunds, T.J. Edwards, Noah Sewell, Ruben Hyppolite II, Carl Jones Jr.

Mandatory Credit: Daniel Bartel-Imagn ImagesNoah Sewell played his way onto the roster, as his performance against the Dolphins in Preseason Week 1 stood out to fans and analysts alike. Rookie Ruben Hyppolite II has been praised since OTAs. With Amen Ogbongbemiga beginning the year on injured reserve, Sewell and Hyppolite could use the first four weeks of the season to solidify their positions by making some splash plays on special teams in the veteran’s absence.
Injured reserve, designated for return: Amen Ogbongbemiga
Cornerbacks (6): Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon, Tyrique Stevenson, Nahshon Wright, Josh Blackwell, Nick McCloud
Safeties (4): Kevin Byard III, Jaquan Brisker, Jonathan Owens, Elijah Hicks
The secondary looks like I thought it would, with six cornerbacks and four safeties. Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson reiterated his hope that Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson will be ready to return by the Week 1 target date. However, it is fair to question how ready the second-team All-Pro corner will be after missing the entirety of training camp and the preseason. Jaylon is a pro’s pro, and I have a feeling he will give it his all if given medical clearance. But at this point, I don’t know how much he can give. Then again, 70-80 percent of Jaylon Johnson is better than a lot of corners in this league at full strength.

The Bears cut undrafted free agent kicker Jonathan Kim shortly after the team’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins, putting an end to the only training camp competition among the specialists that mattered.
