Keep the Pressure On: Cubs vs Giants Series Preview

Cubs vs Giants — On the one hand, the Cubs needed as much rest as possible after playing 14 games in 13 days. On the other hand, two 8:45 pm start times (after an off-day) is too much time away from Cubs baseball at the moment. Especially when it felt like they just started to get their mojo back.

In any case, with their sweep of the Angels over the weekend, the Cubs hit a season-high 21 games over .500, and were, for a short time, just 5.0 games out of first place. But the Brewers played and won last night, so the Cubs get moved back to 5.5 games by default. Alas. Just keep the pressure on. Even if the Cubs don’t catch the Brewers by the time the bell rings, you don’t want them to get comfortable and start resting key players before October.

And to that end, I like the way the pitching matchups shake out this week, relatively speaking.

Justin Verlander is on the mound tonight, and although his full-season numbers aren’t particularly impressive, he has more than a few gems to his name this season, including two starts ago against the Rays: 7.0 IP, 2H, 0ER, 0BB, 8K. So I’m happy that he’s matched up against the Cubs’ best starter, Matthew Boyd.

And the same goes for the finale on Thursday, when Logan Webb (the Giants’ best starter) is matched up against Shota Imanaga.

Note: The San Francisco Giants are the worst offense in baseball vs LHP this season (74 wRC+, 25.1 K%). And both Imanaga and Boyd are lefties.

Sandwiched between those two matchups, the Cubs have their back-of-the-rotation righty, Colin Rea, going up against 24-year-old lefty Carson Whisenhunt, who’s got a 6.65 xERA through four starts this season and not much more success in the minors.

Again, relatively speaking, that’s all very favorable for the Cubs. As usual, we’ll dive in deeper on each pitcher in the Pre-Gamin’ posts.

On the offensive side of the ledger, all eyes will be on Kyle Tucker, who started to break back out over the weekend with three homers, a double, a single, and two walks in the series. If that’s a sign of things to come, the Cubs might just give the Brewers a run for their money after all.

After Tucker, it’ll be hard not to focus in on Matt Shaw, who has been an absolute stud, on all sides of the ball, since the All-Star break.
