Love this share from Brendan on Cade Horton’s unique fastball:

What makes Cade Horton unique? He's the only starting pitcher with a fastball that "cuts" and "carries" with over 11 inches of induced vertical break. Not only is the movement unique, but he also rifles it in the zone time and time again between 95-97 MPH. pic.twitter.com/a423thzjiA

Actually ya know what, this graph is also conveniently a good reminder that pitch models don’t always generalize well to outliers.See that cluster of blue dots? That’s where most pitchers — and most of the training data — live. But how do you train a model to predict run value… pic.twitter.com/qEQdxdELSZ

    — Brendan Miller (@brendan_cubs) August 25, 2025 Weird, outlier pitch movements can be very effective. The Cubs have known this for a long time and targeted it, even where the various models suggested that the pitch(es) don’t match the most effective types. It’s a lesson we learned a very long time ago with, among others, Justin Steele’s four-seamer (which also has below average induced vertical (i.e. rise), but naturally cuts). A crazy Cubs prospect factoid that, yes, is aided by a different era (pick-off limits and larger bases), but is still wild:

Cristian Hernández is up to 48 steals this year. With 12 games still left on the South Bend schedule, he needs just 8 stolen bases to pass John Andreoli’s 2012 mark to have the most bags at a Cubs full-season affiliate since Tony Campana in 2009 (66)

    — Greg Huss (@OutOfTheVines) August 26, 2025 Were you aware that Cristian Hernández was such a prolific base-stealer? It’s a bit like when James Triantos stole 47 bases last year. Just kinda sneaks up on you. For now, this is only for Japan, but it’s just a start:

NEWS: Netflix has its first agreement with Major League Baseball to stream the 2026 World Baseball Classic in Japan. The partnership is the start of a relationship that is expected to grow soon.More details from @AndrewMarchand: t.co/mMjJjLONFg

    — The Athletic (@TheAthletic) August 25, 2025 Reportedly, MLB is still negotiating with Netflix for the Home Run Derby, specifically. At BEST this is completely and inexcusably reckless:

Was William Contreras "up to no good?" pic.twitter.com/8KrTy9739k

    — MLB Now (@MLBNow) August 25, 2025 At worst, it was kinda what it looked like: a dangerous attempt at interference. The Contreras brothers should maybe cool it with the whole throwing-bats thing. And speaking of the Cardinals’ travails last night:

#Cardinals announce a tickets sold crowd of 17,675 tonight. That is the smallest in Busch Stadium III history, and it is the first time they’ve sold fewer than 20,000. #stlcards pic.twitter.com/iA2Cv2WSth

    — Derrick Goold (@dgoold) August 26, 2025 They did get a walk-off winner from Alec Burleson:

    ALEC BURLESON WINS IT! pic.twitter.com/9bSWan1di7

    — St. Louis Cardinals (@Cardinals) August 26, 2025 Did that look familiar to anyone? The Pirates clearly needed Mike Tauchman in center field:

HOLY COW!! MIKE TAUCHMAN!CUBS WIN! pic.twitter.com/K7nFdwZ8im

    — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) July 29, 2023 Fielding the ball was one thing, but how did he get this throw off to second base:

    — Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) August 26, 2025 This was a fun one:

    — Mitch Santini (@mitch_santini) August 25, 2025 Speaking of catchers who rake, more history for Cal Raleigh, who is the all-time single-season record holder for homers by a catcher:

HISTORIC.Cal Raleigh joins Ken Griffey Jr. as the only Mariners in team history to hit 50+ home runs in a season pic.twitter.com/b2E9wYU7Uu

Cal Raleigh is the first switch hitter with at least 20 home runs from both sides of the plate. One of the best seasons by a switch hitter we've ever seen. pic.twitter.com/vwXyh8d5P3

    — Just Baseball (@JustBB_Media) August 26, 2025

Cal Raleigh hit his 50th HR tonight in Game 132. In 2022, Aaron Judge was at 51 HR through Game 132.(Judge then hit HRs in 4 straight from Games 133 through 136.) The fact that a catcher is *near* Judge's 2022 pace is extraordinary. @MLBNetwork @Mariners @SeattleSports

    — Jon Morosi (@jonmorosi) August 26, 2025 Fraud is bad, but this is funny:

A Tennessee man is accused of using the names of deceased or retired professional baseball players to submit fraudulent class action claims. His name? George Herman Ruth.
