Lourdes Gurriel Jr. continued his parade of runs batted in with a three-run home run and Bryce Jarvis threw 5.2 innings of two-run ball, but the Arizona Diamondbacks fell to the Milwaukee Brewers 7-5 on Monday at American Family Field.
Gurriel’s blast capped a five-run sixth frame that nearly erased a 6-0 deficit, but the Diamondbacks (64-68) spent the evening playing catch up after a brutal inning from Eduardo Rodriguez.
Rodriguez’s outing began well, as he retired the first six hitters he faced. The left-hander just could not get anyone out in the third inning, which started with five consecutive two-strike hits.
He ended up allowing six straight hits, five of which were singles, and the Brewers tagged him for five runs. Christian Yelich ended the streak of hits with a two-run single. Rodriguez has made six starts this season with five or more earned runs allowed.

The veteran only recorded one out in the third inning on Monday, and his ERA climbed to 5.67 — a full run worse than Madison Bumgarner’s 4.67 ERA in his second year with the team in 2021, as a comparison.
Jarvis entered the game and saved the rest of the bullpen, only allowing a pair of solo home runs and striking out six.
Arizona’s offense, meanwhile, could not get anything going against Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff, who shut out the D-backs through five.
Alek Thomas singled to lead off the sixth, followed by a Geraldo Perdomo hit-by-pitch. A cutter from Woodruff ran up and hit Perdomo in the right hand, and he remained in the game after a visit from the athletic trainer.
Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll each singled home a run before Gurriel crushed a first-pitch sinker. Gurriel has a league-leading 32 RBIs in August, and he is closing in on the franchise record for RBIs in a single month. J.D. Martinez owns the record with 36 in September 2017.

The lineup was quiet outside of one inning, and it finished with 14 strikeouts. Pavin Smith, Adrian Del Castillo and Blaze Alexander finished a combined 0-for-11 with 10 strikeouts. Smith is 1-for-16 since coming off the injured list last week.
After winning four games in a row, the D-backs have dropped two straight. With the New York Mets winning their game over Philadelphia on Monday, Arizona fell to 6.5 games behind a playoff spot.
