ORR’S SPRINGS. A correspondent writes to us that in a recent trip to these springs over the new road he found much of the scenery to be grand and especially enjoyable through the timberlands at the summit of the mountains, which richly pays for the fatigue and exposure to the searching rays of the sun. He came to the conclusion there was the finest opportunity for the stage to roll over the grade and kill the passengers of any place in California, for there are no “turnouts” or provisions made for meeting teams on the steep grades, and thinks the road should not be accepted until such contingencies are provided for, when it will become a favorite drive for pleasure seekers and offer safety to them whose business calls them over the mountains. We endorse his views. More turnouts are needed on all our mountain roads, and this is especially true of the new Orr’s Hot Springs road.

A competent, middle-aged lady desires a position to do housework in small family. No objection to service in the country. Apply at this office.

A merry-go-round has been put on the vacant lot opposite the post-office, by some traveling men. It is quite a novel contrivance and is being fairly well patronized.

Some of our young gentlemen (?) have been indulging in bathing in sight of the road to Vichy Springs. The officers have been informed of such conduct, and the parties are warned to make themselves scarce in those parts hereafter.

Bud White, who has been serving out a sentence of 80 days in the county jail for disturbing the Indian school at Pinoleville, was released Sunday morning, his term of office having expired.

Bids for the construction of the high schools at Ukiah and Mendocino are advertised for. The buildings are each to cost $6,000, the one at Ukiah to be a two story and the one at Mendocino a one story building.
