Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain moving through San Diego County prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood warning that will remain active until 5 p.m. Monday.
The monsoon thunderstorms that developed over the mountains could potentially bring heavy rainfall exceeding one inch per hour. Southeastern San Diego County residents might also experience thunderstorms on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, according to the NWS.
“Widespread storms are expected to develop beginning around noon, with flash flooding as the main threat,” the NWS said.
There is a high chance of storms in San Diego County mountains and deserts, Riverside mountains and Coachella Valley. The NWS states that other locations that will be especially affected include the Interstate 8 between Pine Valley and Boulevard, Mount Laguna, Lake Morena, Pine Valley, Campo, Potrero, Highway S1 between Lake Cuyamaca and Mount Laguna, Barrett Lake and Dulzura.
The NSW warned about staying safe during floods and turning around when encountering flooded roads, as most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
“Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route,” the NWS said.
