There’s still technically several weeks left in summer, making it crucial to soak up every last bit of sunshine while noshing on your favorite seasonal peak August summer fruits. After that, it’s on to thick cable knit sweaters and pumpkin spice everything. But while you’ve probably been enjoying plenty of light, fresh drinks this season, there’s a moody cool-weather cocktail that just got a summery upgrade. It’s the classic Bloody Mary cocktail, which was just morphed into the frozen Bloody Mary (or Fro Blo Mo) by cookbook author Molly Baz. The drink involves freezing your standard Bloody Mary ingredients, along with a generous dose of that iconic summer fruit: the watermelon. It’s all part of Baz’s self-declared “Watermelon Week,” where she takes classic dishes and infuses watermelon in them. Baz isn’t the first person to put watermelon in a Bloody Mary, but the frozen twist is definitely unique. “It’s a lot to process and it’s totally fine if you need a minute, given that I just went ahead and changed the trajectory of your life forever,” she joked in the caption of her Instagram post about the recipe. So…how does this even work? Here’s the deal. Related: This Is the Most Famous Bloody Mary Recipe In the World

A Bloody Mary is a classic brunch cocktail made with vodka, tomato juice, spices and savory garnishes. Known for its bold flavor and hangover-cure reputation, it’s one of the most iconic drinks served at brunch.
What Makes This Watermelon Bloody Mary Different
There are so many things to love about Molly Baz's upgrade on the classic Bloody Mary drink. For starters, the watermelon Bloody Mary uses over-ripe tomatoes, giving you something to do with that market haul you got last week that’s past its prime. That’s coupled with a healthy amount of watermelon.
All of the main ingredients are frozen before blending, creating a slushy-like cocktail of sorts that manages to skip the ice (which can dilute the flavor). And, of course, that’s a solid choice to enjoy while it’s still hot out.
But this drink also has the usual trappings of a Bloody Mary, like horseradish, celery and Worcestershire sauce, making it clear that you’re still enjoying a classic drink—it’s just twisted, in the best way possible.

How to Make a Watermelon Bloody Mary
Baz broke down the recipe on Instagram, as well as her website, so you can pull this off at home.
Start out by chopping up ripe tomatoes, watermelon and celery, and put them in a large freezer bag. Place that in the freezer for about six hours, before tossing your (now-frozen) ingredients in a blender. Follow that with fresh lemon juice, a generous squirt of tomato paste, a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, salt and pickled hot pepper brine.
Add a solid helping of gin—not vodka—and blend. Serve your watermelon Bloody Mary in frozen glasses with a salted rim, along with a garnish of cherry tomatoes and watermelon on a toothpick. Voila! It’s summery enough to still be seasonal, but classic enough to still qualify as a Bloody Mary. Who says you can’t have it all?
