Gas prices in San Diego are ticking up due to final summer travel, the back-to-school rush and a series of outages at the PBF Refinery in Torrance, according to the Auto Club of Southern California.
The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County rose to $4.633 Monday, up six-tenths of a cent.
The average price is 8.3 cents more than one week ago and 8.2 cents higher than one month ago, but 3 cents less than one year ago. It has dropped $1.80 since rising to a record $6.434 on Oct. 5, 2022.
The national average price rose for the sixth consecutive day, increasing eight-tenths of a cent to $3.161.
The national average price is 2.4 cents more than one week ago and one- tenth of a cent more than one month ago and 19.2 cents lower than one year ago. It has dropped $1.855 since rising to a record $5.016 on June 14, 2022.
Anlleyn Venegas, a senior public affairs specialist for the auto club, which is part of the American Automobile Association, explained the recent rise in prices in due to a variety of factors.
“We know a lot of people are going to be taking trips this week, since it’s going to be their last chance to do a family trip during the summer. Also, whenever kids are back at school, we do see a lot more cars on the road,” Venegas said. “This could also affect demand.”
Even with back to school and labor day weekend, the main contributor, according to Venegas, is a series of planned and unplanned outages at the PBF refinery in Torrance. The refinery reported one planned and one unplanned outage last week, and one unplanned outage this week.
During maintenance outages, production is halted and gas supply in the area is affected. Maintenance at the refinery is expected to wrap up on Sept. 11.
