With most of their work on Gobbi and Main streets done, construction crews this week will be turning their attention to Perkins Street, Public Works Director Tim Eriksen told the Ukiah City Council at its last meeting.
“Gobbi (Street) is pretty much done, Main (Street) is done, they’re lifting the iron now, that’s all paved. And so now we’re going on to Perkins Street, which will be heating up on Monday (Aug. 25),” said Eriksen, adding that: “This would be a good time for anyone who hasn’t enjoyed Gobbi Street, to now go enjoy that and stay away from Perkins for a while,” explaining that the new stoplight at Perkins (Street) and Orchard (Avenue) “will be fired up on Monday, and it’s going to go into ‘flash,’ for some time, (because) there are new lights that are going to be pointing at lanes that don’t exist yet, so we don’t really have any other option than to go into ‘flash.’ And of course we’ll be monitoring that, and making sure that goes smoothly.”
As for the work on Perkins Street, Eriksen said it should cause less congestion than the work on Gobbi Street, because “we’re not doing the utilities, but we are doing the storm drain lines, so the ‘Street Flooded’ signs should be never seen again on that street.”
More details were provided in an email update from city officials:
Big changes are coming to Perkins Street: we’re adding an eastbound lane with updated signals to improve traffic flow! We’re also paving, fixing sidewalks, and storm drains. This work will cause traffic delays due to the signals being in “flash mode.” The new signals, which are being installed now, are configured for the new lanes, not yet in place. Therefore, throughout the project, the signals will remain on flash and will be restored after paving and striping are completed. Please use alternate routes when possible. Main Street: Paving is complete! Thank you to the teams who worked hard to get this portion of the project completed. Irons are being raised, and striping and signage are scheduled for Sept. 8-19th Gobbi: Landscaping is expected to begin within the next week or two.The hours for the construction work were described as from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with night work on Perkins Street scheduled from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday.
