Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal on Monday strongly condemned the objectionable and indecent remarks made by BJP MLA Saroj Padhi against party president and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik, saying such comments are only an attempt to cover up the ruling BJP’s failures.
The BJP has been deliberately spreading misleading statements about VK Pandian. The people of Odisha know very well that Pandian has retired from politics, not from his association with Naveen Patnaik. The BJP should stop indulging in such unhealthy politics, the BJD said in a press briefing at Shankha Bhavan.
BJD spokesperson Tambunath Panda and media coordinator Dr. Lenin Mohanty launched a scathing attack on Padhi, citing his chequered past.
Panda alleged that the Asika MLA had a record of involvement in gambling and had once gone missing in 2022 after such activities, later admitting before the media that his mental condition was unstable. He further pointed out that Padhi’s audio, demanding money from the sand mafia, had gone viral, and that he is widely known in his constituency for collecting illegal “PC” on development works.
“It is most unfortunate and condemnable that such a person has been nominated by the BJP to attack Odisha’s most respected and popular leader, Naveen Patnaik,” Panda said.
Dr. Mohanty, highlighting the BJP government’s failures in the last 14 months, said that the so-called “double engine” promise has fallen flat. He pointed out that Odisha has witnessed an 18.19% cut in central grants, a sharp fall in state revenue from sand and morrum mining (₹1485 crore to ₹600 crore), and a steep rise in crimes against women. “Law and order is in complete disarray. For 15 days, people have been suffering due to the employees’ strike, yet ministers are busy blaming BJD instead of resolving the crisis,” he added.
He also noted that six cabinet berths remain vacant, and internal conflicts within BJP have left governance in paralysis. “To hide its failures, the BJP is resorting to cheap and indecent remarks against Naveen Patnaik, but the people of Odisha will not tolerate such malicious politics,” Mohanty said.
Asserting BJD’s strength, Dr. Mohanty expressed confidence that the party will once again secure victory in the 2027 Panchayat elections and the 2029 General Elections.
