Water main break impacts parts of Alameda

ALAMEDA — Traffic remained impacted Monday morning as crews completed repairs and repaving after a Sunday night water main break that caused some customers to lose service, officials said.

The break to the 12-inch cast iron pipe that was installed in 1942 happened about 7:30 p.m. Sunday near Webster Street and Buena Vista Avenue, resulting in some sink holes and flooding.

The impacted area included Buena Vista and Webster to the Alameda Landing area and Alameda Point, city officials said. Some East Bay Municipal Utility District customers experienced low pressure while others had no water, officials said.

Webster Street was initially closed from Atlantic to Pacific avenues.

EBMUD made repairs Sunday night to restore water service to all but four customers, but everyone was expected to have running water later Monday, utility officials said.

As of 9:30 a.m. Monday, EBMUD work crews had fixed the break but were still making pavement repairs. A section of Webster Street from Lincoln Avenue to Atlantic/Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway remained closed, city officials said.

Officials said one lane was open for southbound/westbound traffic but motorists could expect delays and were advised to follow all posted detours and drive with caution.

The cause of the pipe break was under investigation, EBMUD said.
