DANSVILLE, N.Y. – When our First Alert Weather team gives you the temperatures across the region, have you ever noticed that Dansville is often 4 to 5 degrees higher than its neighbors? Is it an anomaly, or is it the norm?
A viewer named Jim wrote to News10NBC saying: “Why is Dansville’s temperature always higher than surrounding reported temperatures? Is it positioning of equipment or a warmer area in general?”
Since June 1, the average high temperature in Dansville is 86 degrees – more than 5 degrees higher than the City of Rochester’s average high of 81.7 degrees.
News10NBC’s Emily Putnam took this question straight to First Alert Meteorologist Nate Morris.
“It mainly has to do with the topography of the area,” Nate says. “We call this effect downsloping. Lets, for example, say we got a south wind on a warm day. That air is going to flow into the valley in areas like Dansville or Canandaigua. When you have a wind blowing into that valley, it starts off a little bit cooler, but as it goes down, it starts to compact and that actually warms up the air which can cause Dansville’s temperature to be up to 5 degrees warmer than it is in Rochester.”
Rochester can also have a breeze off Lake Ontario, making it a bit cooler than areas south of the city.
