Brookfield Zoo is set to welcome a new animal to its facility later this year, as a female polar bear will make her debut in coming months.
Amelia Gray is an 8-year-old female polar bear, and she will be arriving at Brookfield Zoo after spending the first part of her life at the Oregon Zoo, according to officials.
As she gets acclimated to her new surroundings in the Great Bear Wilderness at the zoo, she will eventually be introduced to her new “roommates,” with Hope and Hudson already living at the zoo, officials said.
“We look forward to welcoming Amelia Gray to Brookfield Zoo Chicago, as her arrival is a powerful opportunity to educate the community of the critical need to protect this vulnerable species,” said Mark Wanner, associate vice president of animal care and conservation at Brookfield Zoo Chicago. “With declining populations in the wild, zoos play an invaluable role in understanding polar bears and ways we can help protect their populations in the wild.”
The ultimate goal of the transfer is for Amelia Gray to rear cubs to help boost populations of the endangered bears, according to officials.
Officials estimate that after she becomes acclimated to her new surroundings that Amelia Gray could make her public debut at the Great Bear Wilderness attraction by mid-October.
The zoo says its research is dedicated to protecting polar bears, as they could potentially go extinct this century because of the effects of climate change. The zoo cited the first-ever CT scan of a live polar bear and several other incredible projects in a press release heralding Amelia Gray’s arrival, and say they will continue to undertake the projects to better understand polar bears and their critical role in the ecosystem of the planet.
Admission to the zoo costs $29.95 for adults. Children age 3-to-11 are $20.95, with senior tickets available for $24.95.
