Bears Make Their First Cut, Vikings QB Trade, Shilo Sanders Ejection Video, and Other Sunday Bullets

Writer’s block is preventing me from putting something pithy here.

The Chicago Bears are 15 days away from starting their regular season against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football. Speaking of the Vikings, they were busy on Sunday morning:

Trade! The #Vikings are sending QB Sam Howell to the #Eagles, sources tell me and @RapSheet. Minnesota gets a 2026 5th-round pick and a 2027 7th. Philadelphia gets a 2026 6th and Howell, an experienced backup for Jalen Hurts while Tanner McKee deals with an injury. pic.twitter.com/RVRam0CmbH

Vikings reached agreement with Carson Wentz, per source.

    — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 24, 2025 This is the second time Sam Howell has been traded this year. Howell went from the Washington Commanders to the Seattle Seahawks in a trade on NFL Draft weekend, which slipped under some radars because there were bigger fish to fry on that weekend. And now, Howell is heading back to the NFC East to play behind Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback Jalen Hurts. I hate that I like this trade for the Vikings, who turned a quarterback on an expiring deal into future draft capital. Considering the team’s quest to trade for a new receiver who can hold down the fort while Jordan Addison is suspended, getting useful draft capital for a backup quarterback is a thrifty move. As for adding Carson Wentz to serve as J.J. McCarthy’s backup, that move makes sense for both parties. Wentz provides Minnesota with a veteran presence who won’t be a threat to taking McCarthy’s starting gig if the 2024 first-round pick struggles. And for Wentz, working under Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell has shown itself to be a path to brighter days — just ask Sam Darnold (who went from afterthought to highly-paid free-agent after his one year in Minnesota) or Daniel Jones (who went from Giants castoff to Vikings backup to Colts starter in the blink of an eye). Carson Wentz #11 of the Philadelphia Eagles and Mitchell Trubisky #10 of the Chicago Bears talk after the game at Lincoln Financial Field on November 03, 2019, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images) Do you remember when Carson Wentz was a rumored Bears trade target? What a wild time that was to be following the team. Also: 2021 feels like forever ago. This serves as yet another reminder of how quickly the NFL moves. The cuts are coming! ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports (via Twitter/X) that the Bears are parting ways with wide receiver Samori Toure. A Green Bay Packers seventh-round pick in 2022, Toure did not play a regular-season snap for the Bears after signing with the team in August 2024. This is the first of many cuts that will come as Chicago’s football team trims its roster to 53 players ahead of the 3 p.m. CT deadline on Tuesday. Kevin Fishbain (The Athletic), Brad Biggs (Tribune), Patrick Finley (Sun-Times), Courtney Cronin (ESPN) are among those who have Bears 53-man roster projections. We’ll share Patrick’s projections later in the morning. There aren’t too many things that are dumber than punching a man wearing a helmet. But that is what Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie defensive back Shilo Sanders did on Saturday night:

    — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) August 24, 2025 Am I the only one who had flashbacks to the Javon Wims incident or the Anthony Miller ejection? It still boggles my mind that the Bears spent the week warning their players not to fall for Chauncey Gardner-Johnson’s shenanigans … and they didn’t anyway. For me, that was the first sign that the Matt Nagy-Ryan Pace experience needed to end. A peek behind the curtain: I considered toing a post on the Shilo Sanders ejection on Saturday night. It checked some content boxes for me because it (1) t was a ridiculous NFL moment, (2) involved a player who has some cultural caché (yeah, it’s because his dad is Pro Football Hall of Famer and Colorado football coach Deion Sanders), and (3) it was a glowing example of what not to do as a player right before NFL general managers start trimming their rosters. How mindless do you have to be to throw a punch as an undrafted free agent who is on a roster bubble, trying to make a team? I love this wholesome moment with Bears QB Tyson Bagent breaking down the huddle after practice. That so many players (including QB1 Caleb Williams) were genuinely happy for Bagent is a feel-good moment from a team that hasn’t given us many in recent years. So you should appreciate them when they come your way:
