Greeley Arts Association paints en plein air at local farm

Tracy Stroh and Tom Mothershed, artists with the Greeley Art Association, had all the inspiration an artist could ask for Friday morning at Tigges Farm, 12404 County Road 64 1/2, Greeley.

With the smell of roasting chiles maneuvering throughout the farm with aid from the breeze and the shining sun, Stroh, Mothershead and four association artists found a spot on the farm to sit back and create during the Greeley Art Association’s Plein Air event.

Tigges Farm, located at 12404 County Road 64 1/2, Greeley, offers fresh produce, fresh roasted chilies and other items. The farm has been in the Tigges family since 1934. It recently opened for the season. It's open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday-Sunday through Oct. 31.

The association hosts the event for its members monthly, usually on Fridays. The event takes artists to different outdoor locations throughout the area where they paint whatever they desire.

“Whether it’s a squirrel in a tree or flowers that are blooming or trees changing colors, I just like being outside,” Stroh said.

Stroh has been absent from the association and its events for a while before Friday morning’s event because she was battling cancer. She recently learned she’s cancer-free, and she’s happy to get back to her artwork.

As the vice president of the association, Mothershead enjoys being around other creatives in the association, and the Plein Air events allow him to create in a simplistic fashion, with minimal equipment.

“For me, I don’t have a big setup,” he said. “I just come out with a simple setup and enjoy a simple setting. You do your best to capture something, but not stress over the details too much. That’s what I enjoy about it.”

Kathy Rickart and her siblings, Gale Loeffler and Ken Tigges, are partners who operate the stand at the farm. The farm has been in their family since 1934, with Tigges currently owning it. Since then, it’s served as a diary, potato, alfalfa and sugar beet farm.

The stand got its start selling fresh produce more than 40 years ago, Rickart said. Soon, they started growing and selling pumpkins and then chiles. A friend at that time suggested they should roast the chiles on-site, and they have since then.

The stand recently opened for the season, operating from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday-Sunday through Oct. 31.

The Greeley Arts Association has 70 members, according to Stroh. Their members’ work has been displayed at the Greeley Arts Picnic, the Greeley Stampede Western Art Show and other events.
