Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, announced that approximately 300 different archaeological missions are currently working in Egypt, with new artifacts are discovered each time – showcasing the endless depths of Egypt’s history.
During his speech at the opening ceremony of the temporary underwater antiquities exhibition “Sunken Antiquities” at the Alexandria National Museum on Thursday, the minister hailed Alexandria as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, boasting unique archaeological and heritage sites and areas.
He praised the dazzling display at the Greco-Roman Museum, and added that the Qaitbay Citadel development project requires more time to preserve its historical appearance and ensure it is able to withstand weather conditions.
Submerged antiquities are a major issue, he noted, with only some that can extracted from the water while others cannot and remain submerged.
The temporary exhibition of submerged antiquities is a small example of the antiquities discovered and the efforts of those working on them, he noted.
Fathy continued that tourism in Alexandria must be optimally used by tour operators and tourism companies, noting that Alexandria should be included on the itineraries of tourist groups, in addition to being linked to the North Coast region.
